Ariana Grande Resting Voice After Suffering Hemorrhaged Vocal Chord

Ariana Grande has some strong pipes, but they need to take it easy at the moment. The 20-year-old singer has had to cancel some appearances and lie low for a bit after suffering from a hemorrhaged vocal chord, E! News confirms. "First day off in forever... Vocal rest and watching movies in with my best friend @alexaluria dunno what I'd do without her," Grande tweeted, and later added, "Thank you guys for the well wishes, I'll be better in no time... just need some rest." However, if there's a way to continue working without straining her voice, she'll do it! We know what you're thinking..."She's a singer, hello!" Just take last night as an example (plus, if there was a singing gig, maybe one of her friends could fill in?). Although Ariana was told to rest her voice, she continued to go through with an interview on KIIS FM last night, but she managed to do it without breaking any rules--thanks to technology. "ALERT: @ArianaGrande joins me next via #text2voice on @1027KIISFM! She's on voice rest, computer will do the talking!! Not kidding," radio deejay JoJo Wright tweeted. "Look who dropped by... @arianagrande!!! (I'm on the left) LOVE HER!!!...Why I LOVE @ArianaGrande: on voice rest, se we used text2voice! Warning: COMPUTER CURSES!!!" Aside from her unfortunate injury, Grande has had a pretty awesome week after receiving some great news yesterday. The young singer's first album, Yours Truly, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart! "My 1st album has debuted at #1 & I can't even begin to express my gratitude. Thank you for supporting my music, this really means the world," she tweeted. Congratulations! Now just make sure to take it easy so we can hear more hit records

Ministers shed tears as Jonathan sacks nine

President Goodluck Jonathan, in his first major cabinet shake-up since his inauguration on May 29, 2011, sacked nine ministers on Wednesday. The sacking , announced by the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, shocked the Federal Executive Council members, most of whom had arrived the Council Chambers in the Presidential Villa in high spirits exchanging banter. Before they left, deafening silence enveloped the Council Chambers as the President reeled out the names of the affected ministers. Some of the sacked and retained ministers betrayed their emotions as they shed tears. The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, announced the cabinet shake-up after the weekly FEC meeting in Abuja. The sacked ministers are Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai (Education); Okon Ewa-Bassey (Science and Techology); Olugbenga Ashiru (Foreign Affairs); Hadiza Mailafia (Environment); Shamsudeen Usman, (National Planning); and Ama Pepple (Housing, Lands and Urban Development). The Minister of State for Defence, Olusola Obada, and her counterparts in the Agriculture Ministry, Alhaji Bukar Tijani and Power, Zainab Kuchi, were also affected. The PUNCHhad exclusively reported on August 29 that Jonathan was under pressure from his close aides to sack some ministers and appoint those believed to have political value in their states. The aides were said to have argued that if the President decided to seek re-election in 2015, many ministers lacked the required political clout to deliver their states. A top Presidency source had said that Jonathan was advised by the aides to constitute what they described as “election cabinet.” Such a cabinet, according to a source, will comprise mostly people that would be proud to defend Jonathan whenever he was being criticised. But Maku explained that the dropping of the ministers had no political undertone. Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting, Maku, said the cabinet shake-up was with immediate effect. He said the President, through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, had named the retained FEC members that would oversee the affected ministries pending the appointment of substantive ministers to head them. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to be overseen by the minisiter of State, Prof. Viola Owuliri; the Education by the Minister of State, Nyesome Wike; and the Minister of Solid Minerals, Musa Sada, Housing, Lands and Urban Development. The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, is to supervise the Science and Technology Ministry; the Minister of State for Works, Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, Ministry of Planning; Maku, Defence; and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Goodsday Orubebe, Environment Ministry. When Maku announced that he would oversee the Defence Ministry, State House correspondents shouted but he pleaded with them to allow him to continue his briefing. He then added that the Ministers of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina and Power, Chinedu Nebo would take care of the duties of the sacked ministers of state in their respective ministries. Maku said the President expressed satisfaction with the performance of the affected ministers while in office. He stated that Jonathan assured them that he would call on them whenever their services were needed for the development of the country. The Information minister said, “These ministers have been affected in the cabinet reshuffle and the President in Council expressed his satisfaction and happiness over their commitment to government since they were appointed.” “He (the President) also thanked them for their services to their fatherland and said he would continue to engage them in one way or the other in the implementation of the transformation agenda and of course in the various challenges that government faces around the country and in terms of efforts to transform our country.” The minister said that the President would soon send a list of new ministers to the National Assembly to replace those who had been dropped. Maku who described the cabinet shake-up as a normal process, added that it was meant to inject fresh blood into the government. Maku said, “There is no government in the world where the leaders do not reshuffle their cabinets, there is none. And cabinet reshuffle is part of a systematic public administration and I believe what the President has done is simply to address the issues of re-tooling his government to achieve service delivery. “It is at the discretion of the President at all times to reshuffle his cabinet. It is his own prerogative under the constitution and this has nothing to do absolutely with any other factor other than having come two years into his administration in the last lap, what I see the President doing is to refocus his government, to inject in fresh blood to achieve greater service delivery to the people of Nigeria. That is the only reason for it, any other thing has nothing to do with the decision of the President. “The President is trying to in reject fresh blood into the system while retaining again the loyalty of all those who have worked.” A source at the meeting said the President caught the ministers unawares. He quoted Jonathan as saying, “Some of you will not be with us at the next Federal Executive Council meeting. It is not because you didn’t do well, but that is the ingredients of democracy. You will hear the details from the SGF.” He then read out the affected names and then hurriedly left the Council chambers. One of the retained ministers,Edem Duke of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation was seen dabbing his eyes intermittently with his handkerchief. The former Minister of Environment, Mailafia, also did the same before she was driven out of the Villa. Before Maku’s briefing, Duke’s action made journalists think that he was one of the nine that were fired.

Strike: ASUU, APC accuse FG of insincerity

The All Progressives Congress and the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday accused the Federal Government of “insincerity” in the way it was handling the industrial action embarked upon by public university teachers. This accusation came as the National Association of Nigerian Students asked ASUU members to return to class or drag the Federal Government to court in order to resolve the imbroglio. Lecturers in the nation’s public universities had started an industrial action since July 1 to protest against the non-payment of their earned allowances and non-implementation of an agreement they signed with Federal Government in 2009. The APC, in a statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, noted that the Federal Government’s handling of the crisis had been “insincere and amateurish”. According to the party, the government handling of crisis shows that it does not place premium on education. The Goodluck Jonathan administration, the APC alleged, engaged in extravagance by sponsoring the Peoples Democratic Party convention and the First Lady’s rally for women in Abuja even when the nation’s universities had been shut. The APC added, ‘’It is particularly shocking that the government has carried on as if everything is normal without bothering about the fate of the students who have been marooned at home since the strike started. “Perhaps, this is because the children and wards of those at the helm of affairs are luxuriating in schools abroad, or because they are too comfortable to worry about their less-fortunate compatriots.” Meanwhile, ASUU members in Ibadan zone have refuted the Federal Government’s claim that it released N130bn to the nation’s public universities. They spoke through their zonal coordinator, Dr. Nassir Adesola, during a meeting at the University of Ibadan. The zone has its members drawn from the UI, Lagos State University, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, University of Lagos, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Tai Solarin University. Adesola said, “Rather than for the government to source for the intervention funds from other agencies outside TETFUND, it has decided to hijack the resources of the agency and use it as intervention fund. This attitude of the government is fraudulent. “We are convinced that our nation has the resources needed to train our children. Nigeria must be free but Nigerians must be ready to struggle for freedom. If the government loves our children and the country, they would hasten to implement this intervention. But the government has being brandishing the release of N100bn for the funding of 59 universities and a number of other educational establishments such as the National Mathematical Centre, Nigerian French Language Village and Arabic Centre. Even the National Universities Commission got a chunk of the fund termed administrative cost.” In a related development, the NANS President, Yinka Gbadebo, has called on the striking university teachers to return to class immediately. Gbadebo, who spoke at a briefing in Lagos, said Nigerian students were no longer comfortable with the frequency of industrial actions in the nation’s universities. The strikes, he said, had frustrated and ruined the lives of many Nigerian students. Meanwhile, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has said that non-teaching members of staff of the universities would go on strike if the Federal Government failed to pay the August salaries of university workers.

You can’t win without us, New PDP tells Jonathan

The New Peoples Democratic Party, has told President Goodluck Jonathan that he cannot win the 2015 presidential election without them. The group said the President must not be deceived that they have become inconsequential in the build up to the 2015 elections. The governors in the New PDP are the Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido; Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko; Governor of Kano State, Mr. Rabiu Kwankwanso; Niger State Governor, Aliyu Babangida; Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed and the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi. This was contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of theNew PDP, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent in Abuja. Eze said, “Mr. President should not be deceived by some party leaders who are making him believe that he can do without us. “Most of these leaders currently cannot under a properly organised free and fair elections win their wards. “It is obvious that no presidential election in Nigeria can be won without states like Rivers, Kano, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kwara, Niger States, Jigawa and Kebbi states and these are states we are controlling. “Check the past general elections and see that some of these media-created PDP leaders have no followers in their states at the moment let alone making any impact come 2015.” The inclusion of Kebbi State among the states was not clear as the governor, Alhaji Seidu Dakingari had not openly identified with theNew PDP. Eze also denounced the insinuations in some quarters that former President Olusegun Obasanjo was behind the walkout staged by members of the faction at the Eagles Square, Abuja on the day of the party’s mini convention. “We view this as creating the impression that we are not matured enough to determine our political future and most importantly it was an attempt to smear the international image of Obasanjo as a distinguished statesman and father of PDP and rubbish his current efforts to restore peace to a party which is being threatened by the undemocratic acts of some of its leaders,” the statement added. Eze added that his group was aware of attempt to rubbish the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party, Chief Tony Anenih, for saying that those in the group had genuine reasons for their action. He assured Anenih that members of the faction would not sit and watch some jokers in Tukur’s faction rubbish him or make him look ordinary in the affairs of the party

Family of 3 dies in their new house

Minna — Their joy knew no bounds when they parked to their new house last Saturday. It was a day they had looked forward to and they took the final decision to move into the new apartment in Gbeganu area in Minna, Niger State last Saturday. The Adewales Though not completed, the house was, however, habitable as the plan was to gradually complete the house as they moved in. However, instead of relatives and well wishers trooping to the new house to congratulate them and “wash” it, it was the burial ceremony of the family of three that relatives and other well wishers went for. The middle aged man, Seyi Adewale, a generator repairer, his wife, Felicia, aged 23 and their three-month-old daughter, Deborah, were, Tuesday, found dead in their room with the corpses already decomposing. It was gathered that they died on Saturday night, the day they moved into the new house. Vanguardgathered that the trio, who retired to one of their rooms late in the night to enjoy their first night in the house switched on their generating set close to the room while the fume emitting from the set consumed them overnight. They never woke up to see the next day. Unknown to other neighbours that the trio had parked in, the corpses of the three-member family remained in the room unattended to and were gradually decomposing. However, the junior sister of the deceased husband, Deborah, who had been making frantic effort to locate her brother got more worried, Tuesday, four days after they had moved into the new house. It was a shocker to her after forcing the door of the house open to meet them dead after being killed by fume from the generator. She immediately raised alarm which attracted other neighbours to the scene. She said: “We last spoke on phone on Saturday night, when he was moving his property and family to the new house. “On Sunday, which was the second day, I also called but nobody picked. I still tried on Monday thinking it was due to the poor network service or run-down battery and yet no response and that was why I decided to come down to the house only to meet my brother and family dead and decomposing. “It is very unfortunate for this to have happened to my brother, especially at a time when we are supposed to be rejoicing with them on their new house.” Land in contention Vanguardgathered that the land on which the deceased erected his house had been in dispute with another contender, which was, however, “settled” by the community head of the area. Contacted, the state police command through its spokesman, Mr Richard Oguche, who confirmed the deaths, said they must have died as a result of inhaling the carbon monoxide from the generating set, which was turned on overnight and left close to their room. The corpses have been buried in Minna, the Niger State capital.

10 killed in another military air strike on Boko Haram

MAIDUGURI (AFP) – Nigerian troops launched an air strike and later killed 10 suspected members of Islamist extremist group Boko Haram in a clash in the country’s restive northeast, the military said Wednesday. The military said troops clashed with “fleeing Boko Haram terrorists” late Tuesday following the destruction of two alleged Boko Haram camps in the Konduga area of Borno state. Details were unclear on the air strike and other aspects of the raid. Nigeria’s military has previously used air power since launching an offensive in May aiming to end Boko Haram’s four-year insurgency. The clash followed an “air strike and subsequent destruction of two Boko Haram terrorist camps at Mada, Konduga local government area of Borno state,” Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said in a statement. It occurred on the road as troops were travelling to the town of Biu and “had an encounter with fleeing Boko Haram terrorists,” it said. “Ten terrorists lost their lives and some ammunition, including four AK-47 rifles, five AK-47 magazines and 250 rounds of assorted ammunition, were recovered,” the statement said. “Ten motorcycles belonging to the sect members were destroyed in the air and land raid.” Boko Haram’s insurgency has left more than 3,600 people dead since 2009, including killings by the security forces, who have been accused of major abuses. Konduga has been the scene of previous violence. On August 10 and 11, suspected Boko Haram members stormed a mosque in Konduga and shot dead 44 worshippers as well as 12 other people in a nearby village. Much of the recent violence attributed to Boko Haram is said to have occurred in revenge over residents forming vigilante groups to help the military track down insurgents. It also appears to have shifted from cities to more remote areas of the northeast

justin beier dad....

The family that gets tattooed together, stays together. Justin Bieber jetted to his father's side this week in Canada to be with him while he underwent surgery, apparently on his knee. "My boy @justinbieber flew all the way home to be with me for my surgery. What an incredible boy. #love," Jeremy Bieber tweeted yesterday. "@JeremyBieber of course. #love#family," Justin tweeted back to his dad. Jeremy still lives in Stratford, Ontario--where his 19-year-old superstar son grew up--with his wife and Bieber's half-brother, Jaxon, and half-sister, Jazmyn. "Layed up while the boyz out 4wheelin :(" he tweeted after the procedure, adding, "Ouch :(" earlier today. The Biebers have done a fair amount of globe-trotting together, getting matching tattoos in Israel and making a family vacation out of Justin's stop in Spain during that particularly eventful European leg of his Believe Tour earlier this year. Papa Bieber also gifted his son with a customized "bat bike" motorcycle for his 19th birthday in March, saying in his video card, "That's what you get when you're 19 and you're Justin Bieber." And when you're Bieber's dad and you're laid up for a bit, you get a whole lotta #love.

Colombia arrests woman 'with cocaine' in pregnancy bump

A Canadian national has been arrested in Colombia after trying to board a flight to Toronto with a phony pregnant belly stuffed with cocaine, police say. The tourist caught the attention of a policewoman at Bogota's International Airport who allegedly asked her how far along she was. She reacted aggressively, which aroused the suspicion of officials who went on to search her. This year, nearly 150 people were caught with drugs at Bogota's airport. About a third of them were foreign nationals, according to the Colombian authorities. 'Delicate touch' The Canadian national had entered Colombia at the beginning of August and was about to board a flight to return to Toronto, when a policewoman asked her how long she had been pregnant. "[The Canadian] didn't like the question, which made the official suspicious. Instinctively, she then very delicately touched the lady's belly, realising it was too hard and extremely cold," said the deputy director of Colombia's police anti-narcotics section, Colonel Esteban Arias Melo. The latex belly was stuffed with cocaine The woman allegedly said she was seven months pregnant. After performing a body search, the police found two sealed bags stashed inside the latex belly, which contained 2kg (5lb) of cocaine. Colombian authorities say the Canadian national will be charged with drug trafficking, possession and production and could be sentenced to between five and eight years in prison. The drugs would have had a street value of around $60,000 (£38,000), Colombian police said. Government officials say 874 foreigners are currently being held in the country's jails, the majority on drug charges.

Any Man Coming Into My Life Now Is Just Coming To Suffer' - Frank Edoho's Ex

Three years after her separation from her 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire's host, Frank Edoho, Katherine obiang has opened up why she is not ready to remarry now. Katherine recently said that she is having a lot of suitors, it could have been a great news for those who would consider her hand in marriage, however, she has made it clear that Mr. Right is definitely going to suffer because she is chasing money at the moment and has no time to pay an attention to any relationship. presently and will not have time to give the relationship the attention needed. Hear her, "I am taking a breather. Right now, I have young children. After you have been in a relationship for so long, I think it is healthy to open your mind to other things. Let's chase money first, it will come along. When you look at your children, you want to give them so many things, so let me focus on that." She also said, "My parents do ask me, especially my mum. I am busy doing so many things, which include Lekki Wives Season II. Anyone who comes into my life now is just coming to suffer. I can't focus on that person. It is not that I don't get attention, I do. I get all sorts of attention, but I am not ready. I think in our society, people don't understand when you say you are not ready. They look at me, like I must be mad; but that is the truth. For me, I don't want to bargain, because there are so many things to consider. I am on the radio from 10am to 3pm. From that time to wherever, I am running against time and, of course, I must also pay attention.

'The name of the company is 'Five Star Oil and Gas', a subsidiary of our Five Star brand. There's actually a lot we want to go into but we are taking our time to unravel them one after the other.' The oil and gas sector is the highest revenue grossing sector in Nigeria. The MTN ambassador tells us why he is treading that lane. 'You know the music business is in Nigeria, no one can remain on top for ever, that is why one needs to be wise and put down investments that will see one through when the hits are no more coming'. Mr. Limpopo as KCEE is fondly called by fans isn't going in on this alone as he has the backing and partnership of his elder brother Emeka Okonkwo popularly known as E-Money. 'I know this is a new terrain for me, but I'm doing this with my elder bro, E-Money. Together we can never go wrong. We already have a few friends in that industry, hopefully with their advice and counseling we will get to understand the terrain better.' KCEE who has now followed in the footsteps of Don Jazzy and P-Square who have also invested in the oil and gas business says the long term goal is to own vessels. 'For now we are still in the primary sector of leasing oil equipments and operating oil storage depot. The long term goal is to someday own oil vessels and may be oil blocks too.' Thanks to the success of his monster hit song, 'Limpopo', the former KC Presh band member has had an awesome 2013, headlining major local and international concerts, acquiring new luxury automobiles, projecting into the A-list category and sealing it up with an MTN endorsement dea

ASUU STRIKE: New-PDP Youths Set To Protest

According to reports, the youth section of the new Peoples Democratic Party, nPDP have threatened to mobilize Nigerian youths across the country, to protest against the closure of universities for over two months and alleged insensitivity of the Federal Government to the plights of Nigerian students. The nPDP youth leader, Timi Frank said it was really a shame that students would be out of schools for over three months under a democratically elected government. Frank said the attitude of the current administration, under President Goodluck Jonathan, to the plight of the striking workers was an indication that he had lost track with the basic tenets of governance. He noted that since all entreaties to make government honour its agreement with the lecturers had failed, the only option left for anyone concerned about the future of this country was to mobilise the affected students for a mass protest. To ensure mass participation, he stated that he had held numerous meetings with various student groups in the country. Frank said: "Before I became the national youth leader of the new PDP, I had been speaking against the injustice being meted out to Nigerian students over the ongoing ASUU strike. I can assure you that this is an issue the new PDP will address. "I am going to take this campaign up as the national youth leader of the new PDP. I am going to lead a protest against the present government because it has not done anything to demonstrate that the future of the Nigerian youth is paramount in its agenda. "I have begun consultations with various student groups and we will unfold our strategies for the mass protest soon. "University undergraduates are at home, but today nobody is talking about the situation, all they are talking about is their 2015 ambition. PDP will not give any leader 2015 that will not stand by the youths of this country, that will not resolve the ASUU crisis. Anybody that wants to stand under the platform of PDP must show commitment to the plight of Nigerian youth." He said he had been elected under the new PDP as the national youth leader and that his immediate goal was to rally all the PDP youth leaders across the nation in support of the new agenda of bringing sanity to the party. According to him, it is in redressing the various injustices under the Bamanga Tukur-led PDP that the future of the youth can be secured. He said: "As the national youth leader of the new PDP, the PDP with hope, the PDP with bright future, the PDP with fairness and the authentic PDP under the leadership of Kawu Baraje, I am here today (yesterday) to urge all Nigerian youths under the PDP that we should all remain calm."

Nigeria’s representative at this season’s edition of big brother ‘the chase’ Beverly and Melvin did a little tour of Abuja radio stations in company of Denrele, Uti, Selly from Ghana and made a major stop at hot 98.3 Abuja where Denrele revealed he helped Beverly fill her form which earned her the spot to represent Nigeria at the competition. Most people had expressed disgust at Big Brother’s choice of Beverly as Nigeria’s representative, arguing that she is not a representation of a true ‘Nigerian Girl’… *Denrele Denrele says “I had a lot of people come to me during the ‘Beverly season’ funny thing is that we filled Beverly form in Goldie’s house, Goldie was in US at the time, I had filled 12, then another 12 infact close to like 50 people, everybody had their own personality and I had to make it special for everyone. ‘In her (Beverly) own case, I kept telling her oya (sic) start writing, she was a little non-challant, before we even got Beverly to write it was difficult, others took it seriously, we just need people to give us that extra push in this country which is what we lack, the industry is wide enough for everyone. Big Brother House mate Oneal from Botswana was quoted to have said ‘he was in the studio and they came to pick him up for the Competition

Former plus sized Nollywood actress Ngozi Ezeonu has reacted to rumours making the round that her weight loss is health related; insisting she only worked on her body. For days now, the actress has been posting pictures of herself on Facebook clearly showing that she had lost an incredible amount of weight. Her fans (turned doctors) have diagnosed all manner of illness to this regard. *Ngozi transformed Ngozi in a swift reaction has refuted the claims. “I will really appreciate it if some people will stop insinuating that I’m sick just because I worked on my weight. Please o I’m not sick. Wish us well instead of sickness or death. Thank u’, she wrote on her Facebook page. Fans may have reacted this way following a similar incident recorded with another plus-sized Nollywood actress Ngozi Nwosu who had stepped out late last year for weeks looking all slim and trim provoking similar rumours of illness which she had bluntly denied before eventually admitting. Ngozi Nwosu was suffering from heart and kidney related ailments and had eventually cried to the public for help. Ngozi Ezeonu, however, insists this is not her case

Keshi says Super Eagles will get better with time

Kaduna - Super Eagles’ head coach Stephen Keshi on Tuesday in Kaduna expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance against Burkina Faso, assuring that the team would get better with time. The Eagles beat the Stallions of Burkina Faso 4-1 in an international friendly at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. The match was part of both teams’ preparations for the final round of the Africa Zone Qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Keshi said the goals his team scored during the game were to him not the important aspect of the match. “It wasn’t the goals, but the fact that the game was meant to perfect tactics and help the players to have a better understanding of themselves,’’ the coach said. Keshi said he had seen a fighting spirit in the players since during their 2-0 win over the Flames of Malawi on Saturday in Calabar. The win over Malawi was both sides’ final Group F match in the qualifiers’ second round, with the victory earning the Eagles the group’s lone final round ticket. “I am happy they are improving, and I am confident the team will do better because we have been giving some other players chances to show what they can do,’’ the coach said. He however said the Burkinabes’ lone goal during the game showed that the Eagles would have to work hard. “But above all, I am happy the players played well and were good in their marking ability because they have come to understand the teaching and coaching we have been giving them,’’ Keshi said. Also, while speaking at the press conference, goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama commended his teammates, saying he believed they were moving higher to achieve their goal. Enyeama, who was the Nigerian team’s captain during the match, said there was cordial relationship among the players. “There is a cordial relationship in our team, and I want to praise my teammates because all of us played well,’’ he said.

12-year-old girl commits suicide in Bayelsa

Yenagoa — A 12-year-old girl, Monday, allegedly committed suicide in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the police told the News Agency of Nigeria, yesterday. Mr Alex Akhigbe, Bayelsa Police Public Relations Officer, told NAN that the girl allegedly hanged herself early on Monday. He said: “Yes, police have confirmed the death of the young girl, who killed herself behind her father’s house early in the morning, yesterday (Monday). “The police have also evacuated the corpse from the scene and deposited it in the mortuary. The corpse is still awaiting autopsy. “It was a very strange act and a surprise to see a young girl of that age take her life; it is a real mystery.” He, however, said that investigations were ongoing in the matter to establish the motive behind the girl’s alleged action. “Her parents have not talked to the police. We are still investigating to get to the root of the matter,” he said. “Parents should always keep a watch over their children. They should know the character and kind of friends their kids keep.” “This is not good to our society. What could cause a young person of that age to hang herself to death?; we should improve on moral teaching of our children,” Akhigbe said. The World Health Organisation, WHO, and International Association for Prevention of Suicide set aside Sept. 10 to raise global attention on the prevention of suicide. WHO estimates that the number of people who die by suicide is expected to reach 1.5 million per year by 2020. A WHO, estimate in 2011 showed that one million people die per year by suicide representing “a death every 40 seconds or about 3,000 every day.”

France poised for Syria strikes

PARIS - France said Wednesday it would remain poised to launch military action against Syria over its use of chemical weapons despite ongoing attempts to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis. The warning came after a meeting between President Francois Hollande, his foreign and defence ministers and senior military figures. “France will remain, in permanent contact with its partners, mobilised to punish the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime and to deter them from using them again,” a statement from Hollande’s office read. Hollande said France was nevertheless determined to give negotiations aimed at placing Syria’s chemical weapons under international control a chance to succeed. “The President of the Republic underlined France’s determination to explore every avenue at the UN Security Council to allow, as quickly as possible, effective and verifiable control of the chemical weapons present in Syria,” the statement said. France is pushing for a binding Security Council resolution requiring Syria to swiftly implement its pledge to give up its chemical weapons or face punitive action. Russia has offered to oversee the process and help destroy the arsenal, but is strongly opposed to presenting Syria, its closest ally in the Middle East, with an ultimatum. Moscow has vetoed every Security Council resolution on Syria since the start of the country’s civil war more than two years ago.

Nigeria hammer Burkina Faso 4-1

The Super Eagles recorded a resounding 4-1 victory over the Stallions of Burkina Faso in a friendly match at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Tuesday. Brown Ideye got Nigeria on their way to the win in the 17th minute after Obinna Nsofor’s through ball caused panic in the visitors defence. The Eagles continued to pile pressure on the visitors as John Ogu tested the Stallions goalkeeper in the 13th minute. Shola Ameobi, though playing as the lone man upfront, did well holding the ball up to bring Nsofor and Ideye into the game. In the 20th minute, an Elderson Echiejile cross was nearly converted by Ameobi but he was beaten to the ball by the Burkinabe goalkeeper. It was the turn of Nsofor as he dummied three defenders but was clattered from behind as he was about to pull the trigger. Burkina Faso also had a decent chance at goal but Austin Ejide was quick off the line to collect the cross. Nigeria edged ahead when Ogenyi Onazi dispossessed a Burkina Faso player in his half and fed Nsofor, who released Ideye to chip past the keeper in the 45th minute for the second goal. Burkina Faso nearly pulled one back in added time of the first-half, but finishing let them down. Ameobi, who was given a through ball by Nsofor, scored his first international goal for Nigeria in the 53rd minute. Sunday Mba’s introduction in the second-half for Ogu was the catalyst the Eagles needed to add more goals. His movement caused problems for the opponents. Emmanuel Emenike replaced Nsofor, and the Turkey-based striker scored Nigeria’s fourth in the 62nd minute. Stephen Keshi rang some changes that saw Uche Nwofor come on for Ameobi and Efe Ambrose replaced by Solomon Kwambe. Burkina Faso attacked in sprouts, but they did catch the Eagles napping as some comical defending allowed the visitors to get through and get their consolatory goal in the 78th minute. The game fizzled out as a contest as Nigeria knocked the ball round while Burkina Faso resulted to delay tactics to see out the game. Nigeria beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, on February 10

Four men have been found guilty of the fatal gang rape of a student in the Indian capital Delhi last December

The 23-year-old woman was brutally assaulted on a bus and died two weeks later. Her death led to days of huge protests across India in a wave of unprecedented anger. The case forced the introduction of tough new laws to punish sexual offences. The four men are expected to be sentenced on Wednesday. Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta denied charges including rape and murder, and lawyers for three of the men said they would appeal against the convictions. They face the death penalty over the attack on the physiotherapy student after being found guilty of rape, murder and destruction of evidence. Dozens of reporters as well as protesters calling for harsh sentencing gathered outside the court to await the verdict. "Hang Them! Hang Them! Hang Them!" the demonstrators chanted soon after the verdict was passed down. "I convict all of the accused. They have been found guilty of gang rape, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence... and for committing the murder of the helpless victim," Judge Yogesh Khanna pronounced. Arguments ahead of sentencing will begin on Wednesday morning, he said. The rapists were on an out-of-service bus when they tricked the 23-year-old woman and a male friend into boarding it. Police said the assailants beat both of them and then raped the woman. She died in a Singapore hospital on 29 December - 10 days after the attack - from massive internal injuries. Before she died she was able to give evidence against her attackers from her hospital bed. Her parents who were in court welcomed Tuesday's convictions. "We are happy with the conviction. Now we expect the judge to sentence all of them to death," the victim's father told Indian media after the verdict. "We will get complete closure only if all the accused are wiped off from the face of the earth. This is what they did to our daughter most brutally." The victim's male friend told AFP ahead of Tuesday's verdict that he "never imagined that one human being could treat another so badly". "The rapists injured my friend in the most shocking ways while they beat me with a metal bar and dumped us near a highway. "They wanted us to die. Now, I want them to die and she also wanted them to die... She wanted them to be set on fire." But lawyers for the four convicted men say that their clients have been tortured and that some of their confessions - later retracted - were coerced. Correspondents say that torture is a common occurrence in India's chaotic criminal justice system. Demonstrators outside the court called for the four convicted men to be hanged The case sparked a national debate on the treatment of women. Tough new laws were introduced in March which allowed the death penalty - carried out very rarely in India - to be handed down in the most serious cases of rape. Home Minister Sushul Kumar Shinde said the law should act as a deterrent for similar cases. "Now if there is any such action [rapes] in future, the laws have been made very strict and those guilty of such crimes will surely be hanged," he said. On 31 August a teenager who was found guilty of taking part in the rape in Delhi was sentenced to three years in a reform facility, the maximum term possible because the crime was committed when he was 17. He also denied all the charges. Another suspect, Ram Singh, was found dead in his cell in March. Prison officials said they believed he hanged himself but his family allege he was murdered.

Protests in Warri as Olu of Warri abolishes ancient cultural practices

There have been protests and serious tension in Warri, Delta state for some days for now after the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwase II, announced the abolition of some of the ancient Itshekiri cultural practices. The Olu of Warri who is a born again Christian with a Foursquare Worship Centre in his palace, had last Wednesday September 4th declared in a document titled, "The New Order of Iwere Kingdom," that the "Ogiame" title which had been in existence for over 500 years would no longer exist because it is purportedly associated to a river goddess. He now only wants to serve one God. The Olu of Warri in the document, said: "I also repent for the name and title of "Ogiame" that my ancestors and I have borne, as it connotes our allegiance to Umalokun (goddess of the river) and other deities of the sea, all of which are false gods. Today, I renounce our allegiance to Umalokun and other gods of the sea, land and sky. On behalf of the royal bloodline, the throne, the people of Iwere land, I publicly enter into a new covenant with God." Not only did the King renounce his traditional title of Ogiame, he also dissociated himself from some of the kingdom's age-long traditional practices, which he described as paganism. This seeming born again position by the King has been seen to be an insult to the traditional history of the Itsekiris.  There are also indications that the King did not consult the Itsekiri Traditional Council of Chiefs and Ruling Houses before he took the decision. Now the people of Warri are asking him to either withdraw his statement or abdicate the throne.  Several people, including members of the royal family have tried to convince the Olu of Warri to change his mind on the matter, but the King has so far said there's no going back on his decision. On Sunday 8th Sept, angry Itsekiri youths took to the streets in Warri to register their displeasure on the Olu's new belief. The protest could have turned bloody but for for the timely intervention of Governor Uduaghan, who is also an itsekiri. He appealed to the youths to stay calm, promising that the issue would be addressed. No fewer than 5000 women are expected to embark on a protest today in Warri against the monarch

sandra bullock is now a super mom

It's official: Sandra Bullock is super mom (at least in her son's eyes). The super busy and talented actress and mother stopped to chat with E! News during the premiere of her space thriller flick Gravity at the Toronto International Film Festival and revealed that her baby boy Louis, who witnessed the star filming the movie, now thinks of her as a superhero. "He's got an astronaut doll and he says, 'Like you' but he has no idea why I was an astronaut cause it was like two years ago," she tells E! News. "He just thinks of me as a superhero." But even this superhero has her moments, and told us that during filming, the only thing that would help keep her going was seeing her cute tot's face--awww! "When they knew I was starting to crack, they were like, 'Bring in the kid. Bring in the kid, cause she needs a kid.' And all they would do is just pop him up because I was about nine feet up and you just see the little head come up and I was like [fake sob]." The Alfonso Cuarón movie finds the Hollywood actress and her costar George Clooney playing astronauts who become stranded in the blackness of space after a satellite crashes into their shuttle during a space walk. Gravity hits theaters Oct. 4

Everything Miley Cyrus Should Spoof on Saturday Night Live, Including Twerking, Syria and Liam Hemsworth

t's official: Miley Cyrus will host Saturday Night Live when it returns for its 39th season (Tina Fey is tapped to host the premiere, with Miley picking up the second week). Brace yourself now for one and one half hours--90 minutes, minus commercials--of Miley Cyrus shenanigans. And while Miley has said she "doesn't pay attention to the negative," we have a feeling the SNL writers are more than capable of picking out one or two things she can (and should) spoof during her hosting gig. Here, we picked out six topics that would make for perfect skits. You're welcome, SNL. 1. Opening Monologue: A Message to the Haters ("H8ers"): Picture it: "Live from New York...It's Saturday Night!" Miley walks out wearing something more conservative. Something that covers her butt and boobs and whatever else she's been showing off lately. She stands center stage and tells the crowd she wants to reveal all (not like that). She wants to bare herself (still not like that). She wants to feel naked, like she has nothing to hide (you get the gag by now, right?) She's ready to confront her haters. Various SNL castmembers stand up in the audience and ask Miley about all the crazy rumors out there about her. Bonus points if Liam Hemsworth makes a cameo. At the end, Miley says she feels like she's revealed everything. Then rips off the outfit to reveal her flesh-colored bikini from the VMAs. C'mon, this is Miley after all. 2. Twerkgate at the VMAs: Miley has to spoof the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. It's required of her. We wouldn't be surprised if it's in her SNL contract. It's one of the most noteworthy news stories of the past month. A fact that doesn't bode well for coverage of Syria. SNL is never shy about mixing politics and pop culture, so combining the two--the Energize Bunny of Twerking, Miley Cyrus, challenges Jay Pharoah's Barack Obama to a twerk-off debate about Syria or something--could make for a funny, potentially controversial skit. 3. Miley vs. Miley: Another skit that's all but guaranteed: SNL genius Vanessa Bayer's Hannah Montana-era Miley interviews modern-day Miley on her talk show, The Miley Cyrus Show. Chaos ensues. And we think that's pretty cool. Hopefully SNL could bring Jason Sudeikis back for a spot as Billy Ray Cyrus. We'd love to finally see how he's reacting to his daughter's latest antics. 4. Miley Spoofs Justin Bieber, Round 2: Speaking of The Miley Cyrus Show, last time the real Miley guested on Live, she channeled Biebs opposite Bayer's Cyrus. Seeing as Bieber is the other big pop star currently making headlines for his sometimes-scandalous shenanigans, we'd love to see Miley don the Bieber 'do (and possibly his wispy little mustache?) once more. 5. Miley's Tongue Gives Its First Interview: During Weekend Update, talk turns to Miley's inability to keep her tongue in her mouth and the host (whoever that may be come this new season) announces that the tongue is finally going on record. Out comes Miley Cyrus in a tongue costume. The rest writes itself. 6. Something About Furries: Miley has gotten to at least second base with large, furry bears on at least two occasions. There's something there. (You know what a furry is, right?) Or maybe the SNL writers will come up with other skits we never even dreamed of. We'll find out Oct. 5

Borno govt planning to demolish 20 churches & Christian schools in the state

The Borno State government are planning to demolish at least 20 churches and christian schools in Maiduguri after acquiring land they say they want to use for a 1000-unit housing estate. Demolition notice has been served to the present occupants of the acquired land, which includes owners of farmlands and several churches and schools built by churches. The state government have already dispatched a notice to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) Some people feel like the government isn't really planning to build any housing estate, just looking for an excuse to destroy the churches and private schools, with the alleged grand plan of gradually islamising the state as part of an alleged wider plan to Islamise the northern part of Nigeria. An information leaflet on the acquisition plan from the State Ministry of Lands and Survey has been released. Find it after the cut... The leaflet, entitled Notice of Acquisition and assessment/valuation of structures on proposed site for 1000 Housing Units along Gubio Road Highway,  reads: "I am directed to refer to you farmers and holders of structures on the proposed site for caption matter above and regret to inform you that the Executive Governor has on the power conferred on him by Section (2)b of the Land Use Act 1978 has directed through high powered committee on Construction Ref. no: HPCC/2500/HE/S/TEC/1 to notify you of his intention to acquire your farm lands and assessment/valuation of the structures on the proposed site situated along Gubio Road, Maiduguri. "The acquisition is necessary in view of requirements of the land by the state government for overriding public interest to construct Housing Estate. The affected farmers and holders of structures are to take note and appear on site for the above exercise, please." Meanwhile the General Secretary of CAN , Dr. Musa Asake, has reacted to the planned demolition. He said: "We have seen the  eviction notice from the Borno State Government. We are all Nigerians and there are other places where the State Government can develop. The areas being earmarked for demolition are already developed with churches and schools. "We have enough problems at hand and we don't want to add another problem. Christians have suffered enough in Borno State. If the State Government wants to destroy churches and build any Housing Estate, no Christian will see it as a sign of progress. "As soon as we authenticate the source of that letter, we are going to reach out to the State Government to make sure that Christians don't lose their churches and lands there. But we have no reason to doubt the source of that letter. We have suffered enough in Borno State and enough of all these things which are coming in another disguise. "Borno State Government should reconsider that decision to demolish Churches and their properties because in Borno State, there are many vast lands. They should do that instead of going to these areas where Christians have settled for long. We are asking the Borno State Government not to try it." Asake said.

Open Letter to the ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge by Nkannebe Raymond.

Sir, many greetings to you. It is my estimation that this piece meets you in good health of mind and body. As I take up my pen to write these letters, it is exactly half past 9pm by my wall clock hanging boldly against the wall at the tail corner of my apartment. All things being equal, I should have been sited on the first desk at the famous Lecture Theatre (6) in the academic area of my ‘school’ studying my books in between moments of chattering with my colleagues and senior colleagues; but since after the sad development of July 2nd, I am left with no option than burying my heads into the sea of Nigeria’s political drama in lieu of academic work. My names are Nkannebe Raymond. A 400 level student of the “Prestigious” faculty of Law university of Maiduguri, Borno state. I know it is the melting pot of the Islamic insurgents but I am willing to return back to school any moment to continue my studies if the union you superintend, could tender justice with mercy, find reason with this undoubtedly failed government and return back to the classes. Sir, as I write, Nigerian students are already totally overwhelmed and agitated over what has become an impasse between your union and the Federal government. Never has a year been faster. Only four days ago, the strike action entered its sixtieth day with the year hurrying to embrace the fast approaching yuletide season. Sir, the thought of this strike lasting into October alone, has led me and a great chunk of students out there, wanting to conclude that it will last into the next year but we do not want to wallow in that pool of pessimism and thus have remained optimistic that this standoff will be disentangled in time soon but hardly can that be, unless you and your colleagues are willing to shift grounds and hence the reason why I decided to use this medium to add to the ‘pool’ of letters of almost the same nature that has been corresponded to you in a plea to finding a quick and immediate end to the already frustrating strike. Sir, at a time when students cannot wait to become graduates and contribute their own quota in building the Nigeria of our dream that has defied the efforts of our cult of ‘gerontocrates’, at a time when schools are gearing up to welcome their new intakes to flag off a new academic session, it is unfortunate that our citadels of learning have remained under lock and key and as a result, forestalling the whole dream. It is indeed a situation sordid enough to draw tears from the tear duct of even a ‘Hercules’ amongst us. As I write, my eyes are soaked up in tears waiting to pay allegiance to Newton’s law of gravity. Here am I hoping that I am able to round up this letter before this sheet is soaked up with this salty liquid begging to drop from my eyes. I never intended using this medium to further play the blame game which I feel has been played more than enough across the online and print media. On the contrary, I have taken the troubles of this piece to let you understand somewhat further that sustainable progress doesn’t come to any sector in this current atmosphere of strife and rancor. If anything, it makes matters worse and doesn’t portray us in the positive light, outside the shores of this country. I understand the federal government’s insensitivity to your plight and how much they have dilly-dallied with the concord you claim they ‘freely’ entered with you even though you were not at the helm of affairs then, way back in 2009. From my diminutive knowledge of the Law, it is a trite that: Pacta Sunt Servanda to the effect that agreements are meant to be kept but much to my quagmire, this government has either consciously or unconsciously, sworn to re-write the doctrine. But haven said that, while we chastise the government, I will crave your indulgence a bit by asking you to momentarily put yourselves in their shoes. When this much touted agreement was reached some 3years ago, little did we know that we shall be subsumed in an insecurity situation that will defy every bid at solving. The security situation has continued to eat deep into our pockets and at the same time preventing us from committing our resources to the critical sectors where they are needed most. It is an unfortunate situation which we have collectively been drowned into and together we can only romance with hope to get through it. Therefore since we all know we are faced with a common problem, our demands it is expected naturally should not in any guise be emotional but must be geared towards the attainment of a peaceful compromise and not taking measures that will end up heating up an already boiling polity. Sir, it is against this backdrop, that I urge you and your union to sheathe your swords as they have psychologically “killed” too many a Nigerian student by calling a NEC meeting to consider what the government has offered and finding a lasting solution to this strike. If only you can take this uncommon step, history and not hysteria will forever remember you in its good books and not listing your name in the annals of infamy. 130 billion is undoubtedly a fair bargain if truth is anything to go by them. Sir, statements such as: “ ASUU will not call off strike until all her demands are met” which has always come from your office, has an undertone of “greed” when construed at the widest stretch Nothing has been achieved in an atmosphere where people are not willing to shift grounds. The same act by our second generation of leaders cost this nation 30 months of bloodletting which she still hasn’t gotten over even as I write. If there is any, I am always receptive to learning and will be honored to know, if you ever deem this letter worthy of a rejoinder. This country belongs to all of us and if we must insist that the problem of every sector must be completely solved, then I am afraid we may down tools and the country will stop working to the detriment of you and I. Poor as our educational standard might be today, I am not throwing in the towel as to its prospect of springing up tomorrow. That tomorrow, we will get to someday but obviously, not when the drivers of our economy are under lock and key. To think so, is to be drowned in illusion and living in a fool’s chalet. These may be my words, but I am upbeat that I have spoken the heart of the average Nigerian student and too many of them share my sentiment. Am sorry that this letter has refused to come to a grinding halt. If I continue to write, I may write until the tears start flowing. All that I crave for is that you use your good office to ‘drag’ your colleagues back to the negotiation table and not just that, but going there with a mind frame of bringing an end to this vendetta between your union and the FEDS. Our patient as students has been tried more than enough. How much more psychological trauma must we be made to condone? Sir, consider the plight of that Nigerian student out there depreciating in his potentials. Consider the feelings of that young chap in the street who had just come out with flying colurs in the just released WASSCE result and bagging hopes to secure admission into the university. How about you consider that young student in Maiduguri who cannot wait to graduate froma town which has become a near deathtrap lest he broker his degree with his life. Consider the plight of our parents who cannot wait to have us back to schools. In fact, the scenarios are just endless. Colin Powell was right when he said that, “Leadership is all about Solving Problems”. Without any prejudice to him albeit posthumously, I must add that Leaders who create more problems in a bid to solving a particular problem, are not and cannot be factored into the category of leaders in the real sense of the word. Civility has never stopped winning laurels. Need I say that this means will not be justified in the end? I beseech thee sir! Students Don’t Want Us To End Strike – ASUU Presiden

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it is continuing its nationwide strike on the advice of university students. In a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, the President of the union, Dr. Isa Fagge, said students were tired of the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the Federal Government's failure to implement the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009. Fagge said the union had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal Government fully implemented the agreement. "Our students have come out to say they don't want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don't want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students," he said. On the complaint by the Federal Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement. "There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don't they begin with those ones?" he asked. He added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated. He said, "Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike." Last Thursday, university students under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students reportedly staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti and flayed the Federal Government for failing to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009. The students, who were from public universities, threatened to disrupt activities of private universities, adding that the government was not bothered about their plight because children of government officials were studying either in private universities or studying overseas. The university lecturers began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and is seeking re-negotiation. The Federal Government, last Wednesday, accused ASUU of being unrealistic by continuing its nationwide strike and asked it to rethink its demands, considering other commitments government has. The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who gave government's position on the strike when he briefed journalists at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money on

Oyedepo opens Abuja Winners Chapel

The Federal Capital Territory was agog on Saturday when Bishop David Oyedepo inaugurated one of the biggest branches of The Living Faith Church, popularly referred to as Winners Chapel in Life Camp District in Abuja. The church, which accommodates over 4,000 worshipers every Sunday, was built in less than one year. Thousands of worshipers gathered to witness the unveiling of the cathedral, which is estimated to be over N300m. Oyedepo, who was represented by a Senior Pastor, Dele Bamgboye, revealed that with the dedication of the branch, Life Camp and its environs were set to experience a spiritual rebirth. He therefore charged the congregation to always have faith in God, as only Him can supply all their needs. Top clergymen and some senior government officials in Abuja and in other northern states under the Winners Chapel family, were on ground to witness the official inauguration. Resident Pastor of the church and younger brother to Bishop Oyedepo, Gideon Oyedepo, told journalists that the church project gulped millions of naira

ASUU strike: Just for Mr President’s ears

Mr. President, please do not mistake this piece for an attack on your person because it is not. Neither would I want you to see me as one of those attention-seeking people because I am not. Of course, Sir, I am also not the son of any governor, senator, local government chairman or any political office holder, otherwise, I would have no business writing such an open letter to you because it is against my family’s ethics to ‘talk while eating’. I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness of educational misery, saying, “Prepare the way for either a future of political stability and economic boom or prepare for worse than what religious extremists are meting out to our country now”. As I write on this sultry day, I am completely at a loss to know what to make of my future from here. If this were just the case, it would, probably, be an insignificant reason to go on the rampage with the sword of the pen. But, I write on behalf of the millions of dreams that are getting squashed by the day as the total shut-down of our universities persists. I write on behalf of the future of the several hundreds of thousands who have been privileged, amidst the stiff competition for admission, to grasp tertiary education but may end up worse than their disadvantaged counterparts, since they may never finish, much less finish on schedule their educational pursuits. The handwriting on the wall, clearly now, more than ever before foretells a dangerous twist to the continuing imbroglio between your administration and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). I do not know if the public keeps the date as much as we do but it is well over 65 days already and I cannot help but wonder if anyone really cares what becomes of our street-wandering undergraduates. If I had a next life, I hope to never be a Nigerian or be born with a silver spoon because the poor are really just ‘on their own’ as long as our government is concerned. Mr President, in three simple words, “We are tired”. We, the students in the federal universities, are always at the receiving end of every impasse between ASUU and the government and all I can ask for now is that you and your think tank reconsider your stand on the matter. We can only bear this much! I am not ASUU’s spokesman but it is only logical that I expect your administration to honour the 2009 agreement with the Union so normalcy can return to our campuses and of course, our disenchanted academic lives. Personally, I have spent more years than is required to have my first and second degrees and yet I am grappling to take a Bachelor’s degree out of an institution that only recently had an internal strike because you would have our name ‘rebranded’. Mr President, every day this strike continues, more dreams die and more future riff -raff are born. It is my firm belief that children still do bear the sins of their fathers and even when you are no more, posterity will remember your progenitors for good or ill based on how you handle this national educational crisis we suffer now. It goes without saying that for 14 years that your party has held sway over the affairs of this nation, we cannot boast of a Nigerian university (not a single one) amongst the first 2000 in the world. This is more than enough reason to release the requisite fund for the upgrade of our educational infrastructure as well as the welfare of the future’s moulders. It will only be emphatic to say that we can get out of our educational system as much as we invest in it and though investment in educational is long term, it is also long-rewarding. Your administration will only be breeding poor intellectuals, who will, in turn, produce another generation of mediocre graduates and in 10 years, what do we have, sir? A national carnage! Our unborn children are in jeopardy of being societal scum even before their conception. But you can change all of this! The greatest weapon of mass destruction is to put a teacher who knows nothing before the students. This will be the case if your administration does not honour the 2009 agreement with ASUU such that lecturers’ welfare gets taken care of. Mr President, the one second of your time which I asked for is almost up but I am optimistic that if you give utmost diligence to putting an end to the incessant strikes that have been plaguing our tertiary educational system as much as you do to security matters or party issues and conventions, we would not be where we are today: struggling to maintain peace in our land. I reiterate my advice, sir. Honour the 2009 agreement with ASUU so we may return to our lecture rooms and pick up the pieces of our scattered semesters. So I can round off my first degree programme and go on to patriotically serve my fatherland. So, I can focus on growing my baby company to maturity and provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youths. So, I can get married, give my mother her first grandchild and keep my late father’s name as his only son. So, I can fulfil my dreams of helping young people reach the zenith of their potential through my writing, public speaking and role-modelling. Mr President, help me and my fellow undergraduates live decent lives even if our parents are not among the top one per cent who squander our national earnings in the name of political office holders. Would you do this for me, for us, for Nigeria’s future? I hope you do. Thank you, sir, for giving me a second of your time. •Oyeniyi, an undergraduate student of the University of Lagos, wrote via prince.oyeniyi@ yahoo.com

PHCN workers vow to resist power firms’ handove

Employees of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria have vowed to resist the takeover of the electricity distribution and generation companies by the successful buyers until all outstanding payments are made. The workers’ position contradicts the recent pronouncement by the Federal Government that the successful bidders who met the deadline for the payment of the 75 per cent balance of their bid prices could now take over the companies. Our correspondent gathered that the Federal Government had not cleared the workers’ pensions as captured in the agreement between both parties, but it went ahead to announce that all was set for the private investors to take over. The General Secretary, Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, an umbrella body for the PHCN workers, Mr. Abiodun Ogunsegha, said on Sunday that the government was wrong to have stated that the power firms would be handed over to investors. He said, “No company can take over until payments are concluded. Yes, the government has paid some workers, but it has not concluded the payment. “The payment is ongoing. The understanding we have is that payment has to be concluded; but this has not happened. “What they are paying is the severance and gratuity part of the agreement. They have not paid the pension. But they are promising that they will pay all. Until that is done, it will be wrong to say you are handing over the companies to private investors.” The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, had said in a statement that the government had recorded substantial compliance with the payment terms by the preferred bidders and stressed that the investors could begin to take over the electricity companies. “The completion of payment now entitles the preferred bidders to take full possession of the 15 PHCN unbundled entities, which include 10 distribution companies and five generation companies,” Nebo said.

No player worth €100m, says Zidane

It was “incomprehensible” that Real Madrid paid Tottenham Hotspur €100m ($131.86m) to sign forward Gareth Bale as no player is worth that amount of money, former France striker Zinedine Zidane said on Sunday. Bale, 24, joined the Spanish club on Sept. 1 in a world record transfer after months of speculation. Zidane, who is now Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant coach at Real, joined the nine-time European champions in 2001 for a then record fee. He felt at the time that fee was over the top and cannot comprehend the money involved in Bale’s move. “Ten years ago I was bought for €75m ($98.69m) and I said I was not worth this,” Zidane told French TV channelCanal Plus. “Now I would think that a player is not worth this. It’s football, unfortunately it’s incomprehensible with what is happening to pay so much.

17 killed in B’Haram, Vigilance group clash

No fewer than 17 people were killed and 17 others injured when suspected Boko Haram sect members attacked some members of the civilian vigilance group in Benisheik village, near Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, on Saturday night. The attack came barely 48 hours after the Nigeria military raided an Islamic insurgent camp and killed about 50 sect members in the North. While the 12 vigilance group members were killed, five Boko Haram members lost their lives and four AK-47 rifles were also retrieved in the clash. According to an operative of the Civilian Joint Task Force Vigilance Group, Zannah Fannami, the vigilance members were killed while repelling Boko Haram’s attack on the town. The 27-year-old operative, with the Civilian Joint Task Force vigilante group, who is receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for a bullet to his right thigh said, “We heard that they would be coming since Friday and had been keeping vigil all nights. “Late Saturday night, when we least expected it, we heard a thunderous sound like that of a bomb coming from the direction of a soldiers’ post, then we decided to advance toward the sound and the Boko Haram gunmen, carrying sophisticated arms, opened fire on us, killing 12 of our members.” The survivor explained that the vigilance group, which was formed to fight the Boko Haram insurgents, killed five of the sect members and took possession of four of that AK-47 rifles. Another injured Civilian-JTF operative, 32-year-old Muhammed Abuwar, blamed the military for the attack, saying the soldiers refused to shield them from the “expected” attack. Borno State Government labour adviser, Garba Ngamdu, who also hails from Benisheik, said one of vigilance members had died in the hospital as doctors tried to remove bullets from his body. He also confirmed the death of the five Boko Haram members at the hands of vigilance members with machetes and said their corpses were on the outskirts of the town.

CAN kicks as Borno plans to demolish churches

The Borno State Government has begun moves to demolish over 20 churches and schools built by them. Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the state government would embark on the demolition exercise any moment from now. Sources hinted that the state government had already dispatched a notice to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and owners of farmlands in the area intimating them of the plan to acquire the site for a 1000 housing units. A leaflet from the office of the Borno State Ministry of Lands and Survey dated August 20 and signed by one Musa Ummate (O/C Land Administration) on behalf of the commissioner was obtained by journalists on Sunday in Abuja. The leaflet is titled, ‘Notice of acquisition and assessment/valuation of structures on proposed site for 1000 Housing Units along Gubio Road Highway.’ It reads: “I am directed to refer to you farmers and holders of structures on the proposed site for caption matter above and regret to inform you that the Executive Governor has, on the power conferred on him by Section (2)b of the Land Use Act 1978, directed through high powered committee on Construction Ref. no: HPCC/2500/HE/S/TEC/1 to notify you of his intention to acquire your farm lands and assessment/valuation of the structures on the proposed site situated along Gubio Road, Maiduguri. “The acquisition is necessary in view of requirements of the land acquisition by the state government for overriding public interest to construct a Housing Esate. The affected farmers and holders of structures are to take note and appear on site for the above exercise, please.” But a CAN source said, “Over 20 churches and many schools will be affected. The parcels of land on which the churches were built were bought from farmers and have the authority and certificate of the District Head in Maiduguri popularly calledBulama. The land was not under the ministry when it was bought.” When contacted, the General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake, confirmed the development but called on the Borno State Government to have a rethink. He said, “We have seen that eviction notice from the Borno State Government. We are all Nigerians and there are other places where the state government can develop. The areas being earmarked for demolition are already developed with churches and schools. “We have enough problems at hand and we don’t want to add another one. Christians have suffered enough in Borno State. If the state government wants to destroy churches and build any housing estate, no Christian will see it as a sign of progress.” Asake promised that CAN would take up the matter with Borno State Government as soon as it was confirmed that the letter actually emanated from the government. Several calls and text messages to the mobile phone of the Borno State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Inuwa Bwala, as at 3:45 pm on Sunday for the state government’s reaction were not replied

Ekiti Govt arrests 70 lanlords without toilet facilities in their houses

No fewer than 70 landlords have been arrested in the last two months for defaulting in providing toilets facilities in their houses in Ekiti. The Director of Environment and Sanitation, Mr Tunde Balogun, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ado-Ekiti on Friday. Balogun described the landlords as “recalcitrant residents’’, who always test the will of government when issues relating to policies and programmes come to question. He said that the affected land lords would be prosecuted under the Ekiti State Environmental and Sanitation Law, 2004 and the Environmental Regulations 2009, as amended. He recalled that this year, the state Ministry of Environment organised an awareness campaigns on the need for the landlords to abide by government’s policy of “One House, One Toilet’’. “Those landlords, who were arrested, turned deaf ears to the government’s order, thinking they can ignore an important policy such as this and get away with it,’’ he said. The director, who said the exercise would be continuous one, declared that all offenders would face the wrath of the law. “There is nobody in Ekiti, who will say he is not aware of various existing Environmental laws that are passed by the House of Assembly and assented to by Gov. Kayode Fayemi. “They think we are not serious about this, and so, they must pay dearly for this until they learn to comply.’’

Miss World starts in Indonesia after Muslim hardline protests

Miss World began in Indonesia Sunday amid tight security after days of Muslim hardline protests that forced authorities to order the whole beauty pageant be held on the Hindu-majority island of Bali. As contestants took part in a glittering opening ceremony on the resort island, around 100 police, including some armed with rifles, patrolled around the building where the contest was being held. The ceremony saw contestants perform a traditional dance using fans, as well as a Balinese “Kecak” dance, in which participants sit in a circle and chant while throwing their hands in the air. Nana Putra, an official from MNC media group, the local organiser which is also broadcasting Miss World, said organisers hoped the event would “lift Indonesia’s image to the world”. But the 63rd edition of the pageant has been overshadowed by a snowballing protest movement, and hundreds of police were deployed across Bali as the event got under way. “So far there is no indication of a security threat,” Bali police spokesman Hariadi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said. “However we are still increasing our alertness and security — all entrances to Bali are guarded by our personnel.” Thousands of Islamic hardliners have taken to the streets across the country during the past week, denouncing the show as “smut and pornography” and burning effigies of the organisers. But the anger has not been limited to radicals, with criticism also coming from the country’s most prominent Muslim clerical body, rights groups, and a government minister. Organisers pledged months ago there would be no bikini round during this year’s pageant in a bid to avoid causing offence. However, this was not enough to stop street protests, and on Saturday the government bowed to the mounting pressure by deciding to move the final, on September 28, and several other events to Bali. While organisers always planned to hold the opening of the show on Bali, the final and other events had originally been scheduled to take place in and around the capital Jakarta. However, radicals threatened to stage huge rallies in the area, where there is considerable hardline influence, to stop the events from going ahead. Although Bali has been hit by deadly bomb attacks in the past, hardline influence is almost non-existent on the island nowadays and locals are used to seeing hordes of tourists sunbathing in their swimwear. Announcing the change of venue, coordinating minister for people’s welfare, Agung Laksono, said the government had “listened to what the people wanted”. The organisers said they were “disappointed” by the decision. “There is the potential that we will be seen as a country which always bows to pressure from a noisy Muslim minority group,” Arief Suditomo, from the local organising committee, told AFP. MNC’s Putra said organisers would try to meet the government next week to discuss the decision to move the final to Bali. While most of Indonesia’s population of more than 240 million practises a moderate form of Islam, the influence of the hardline fringe is growing and they have succeeded in getting events changed or cancelled in the past. Last year, pop sensation Lady Gaga axed a concert after a series of protests, where radicals dubbed her “the devil”, threatened to burn down the venue and criticised her for wearing only “a bra and panties

Wentworth Miller Tried to Commit Suicide Before Coming Out: "The First Time I Tried to Kill Myself I Was 15"

Wentworth Miller's road to coming out had some very dark moments. The Prison Break star, who revealed he is gay less than a month ago, admitted that he tried to commit suicide as a teenager while struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. Speaking out at the Human Rights Campaign gala at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel on Saturday, Miller explained that he overdosed on pills during a weekend where his parents were away from home. "The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15," he said. "I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills. I don't remember what happened over the next couple days, but I'm pretty sure come Monday morning I was on a bus back to school pretending everything was fine. And when someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I say no, because I told no one." Miller continued, "Growing up I was a target. Speaking the right way, standing the right way, holding your wrist the right way. Every day was a test and there was a thousand ways to fail. A thousand ways to portray yourself to not live up to someone else's standards of what was accepted." The actor also explained that it made him nervous to come out early in his career. "I had multiple opportunities to speak my truth, which is that I was gay, but I chose not to. I was out privately to family and friends--publicly, I was not. "I chose to lie--when I thought about the possibility of coming out, how that might impact me and the career I worked so hard for, I was filled with fear." But Miller overcame that fear in late August, when he publicly revealed his sexuality after being invited to attend a film festival in Russia, where "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations around minors" and the public discussion of gay rights have been banned. "Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes," Wentworth, 41, says in a letter to Maria Averbakh, director of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival. "However, as a gay man, I must decline." "I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government," he continued in the letter, posted on GLAAD's website. "The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly."
