Somalia Al-Shabab claims Nairobi Westgate Kenya attack
Al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaeda, said the attack was in response to Kenya's presence in Somalia, where its troops have been fighting the militants since 2011.
Earlier, Kenyan officials blamed "armed criminals", putting the toll at 11.
However, the Red Cross says at least 30 people were killed and dozens injured.
On its Twitter feed, the al-Qaeda-linked group said it confirmed it was behind what it called the "Westgate spectacle".
The attackers entered the Westgate centre at about 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT), throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons.
Dozens of shoppers fled; many were trapped inside.
Israel soldier abducted and killed in West Bank
An Israeli soldier has been abducted and killed by a Palestinian man in the northern West Bank, Israel's Shin Bet intelligence agency says.
The soldier was seized on Friday and his body found near the town of Qalqiliya on Saturday, it said.
A suspect - who Shin Bet said worked with the soldier - has been arrested.
The statement said he had confessed to killing the soldier in the hope that he could trade the body in exchange for the release of his imprisoned brother.
Shin Bet named the suspect as Nidal Ammer, 42-year-old Palestinian man.
More arrests are expected, it added
Nairobi Westgate shoot-out kills 11 in Kenya
Mutea Iringo blamed "armed criminals" and said police were in control of a "very serious situation". Officers are going shop to shop to secure the area. The Kenyan Red Cross says 30 died.
Eyewitnesses saw armed men in black entering the Westgate shopping centre on Saturday afternoon.
The Somali militant group al-Shabab has said it carried out the attack.
On its Twitter feed, the al-Qaeda-linked group said it confirmed it was behind what it called the "Westgate spectacle".
Al-Shabab has carried out a string of attacks in Kenya since 2011, when Kenyan troops moved into southern Somalia to fight the militants there.
No group has said it carried out the attack. Some eyewitnesses told AFP news agency they had heard the gunmen speaking Arabic or Somali.
Other witnesses said Muslims were told to leave and that non-Muslims would be targeted.
"They came and said: 'If you are Muslim, stand up. We've come to rescue you," said Elijah Lamau.
He said the Muslims left with their hands up, and then the gunmen shot two people.
The US state department says it has reports that American citizens were injured in what it called "a senseless act of violence".
Trapped
The attackers entered the Westgate centre at about 12:00 local time (09:00 GMT), throwing grenades and firing automatic weapons.
Dozens of shoppers fled; many were trapped inside. Some reports spoke of hostages but this is unconfirmed.
Arjen Westra, who was drinking coffee at the time of the attack, told the BBC he thought the cafe he was in was being targeted by the gunmen.
"I could hear the gunfire moving towards the main entrance of the shopping mall, so some people ran out of our cafe in a kind of panic, and quite a number just fell down as flat as possible on the ground."
Mr Iringo, permanent secretary in the Internal Security Ministry, said special forces were now "evacuating civilians and searching for the criminals".
Nairobi police chief Benson Kibue initially said the gunmen had been trying to rob a shop, but later called it "a terrorist attack".
Targeted
The BBC's Anne Soy, who is at the scene, said there were reports one of the gunmen has been shot dead.
Some of the attackers were reportedly dressed in hijabs, and it is unclear whether they were men or women, our correspondent says.
Emergency medical staff treated some of the wounded near the building's entrance
Security forces have surrounded the shopping centre
Dozens of shoppers were given assistance in evacuating the area
As darkness fell, security forces were still surrounding the building, with gunmen believed to be holed up inside
Security guards used shopping trolleys to wheel out several wounded children and at least one man.
"The gunmen tried to fire at my head but missed. There are definitely many casualties," Sudjar Singh, who works at the shopping centre, told AFP.
"I saw three of the attackers dressed in black and with covered faces and they were carrying heavy rifles," said another witness.
One Nairobi resident, Anupa, who lives near the scene, told the BBC: "I heard the exchange of fire when it happened, and I heard what I thought was a grenade, but I didn't go outside. The whole area is cordoned off."
The Westgate centre is often frequented by wealthy Kenyans and expatriates. Police have urged residents to stay away from the area.
icarly star Jennette McCurdy's Mother Passes Away After Battling Cancer
Jennette McCurdy is mourning the loss of her mother.
The 21-year-old iCarly star's mom, Debra McCurdy, died Friday after a long battle with cancer, E! News has confirmed.
"Jennette has suffered an unimaginable loss," her rep tells E! News. "Please respect her and her family's privacy at this time of mourning. She appreciates the love and support of her fans."
Debra had been battling breast cancer for 17 years, according to the Wall Street Journal, and although she went into remission, the cancer returned and spread to her brain in 2010.
Although Jennette, nor her boyfriend Andre Drummond, have specifically commented on the news, the Detroit Pistons forward tweeted Friday, "In a dark place right now," and "First time in my life, I don't have all the answers for something.."
Back in 2010, Jennette opened up about her mother's battle with cancer, telling the Wall Street Journal she was "shocked" and "angry" when it returned.
"I can't imagine how difficult it must be for my mother to tolerate all she has gone through and continues to go through - the pain, the worry and the battle," Jennette said. "She wakes up every day hurting and goes to sleep hurting even more. My mother, the constant optimist and effervescent, sprightly woman I know her to be, is caged along with this hideous beast they call cancer."
"If you're reading this and you were one of those people who thought, 'young actors have perfect lives,' I hope that you will think differently now," she continued.
"We do have challenges. We do cry. We are experiencing difficult things. But we will continue to smile and crack jokes because, as entertainers, even if we're privately struggling with painful trials, our job is to make others forget theirs."
5 biggest story of the week
It was quite a week for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, who ended their 15-month engagement on Monday, Sept. 15. But that was just the beginning. Just one day after the couple announced their split, the Hunger Games hunk was spotted kissing Mexican actress-singer Eiza González.
But, that wasn't the only story that had people talking.
Take a look at our five biggest stories of the week!
Liam Hemsworth caught kissing Eiza González: The 23-year-old actor was seen locking lips with the 23-year-old beauty, and E! News has all the exclusive pics of the twosome's steamy makeout session. Liam stopped by Eiza's pad in Beverly Hills to give her a piece of luggage, where she flaunted her bangin' bod in a pair of booty shorts and a bright orange bra top, seemingly having just worked out when her sexy visitor arrived. He was only there for about five minutes, and the pair chatted briefly before they started smooching.
Kendall and Kris show off their bikini bodies: Look at these bikini babes!
Kendall Jenner might be the one we are used to seeing in a two piece, Kris Jenner, looks fabulous, too!
On Sunday, Sept. 15, the 17-year-old E! star instagrammed one of her modeling shots from Agua Bendita Colombian Swimwear's 2014 campaign. Not to be outdone, the 57-year-old hot mama (and grandma!) posted her own bikini snapshot, wearing a bright blue bikini, statement necklace and her hair slicked back.
Zac Efron focused on career after rehab stint: Zac Efron recently completed a stint in rehab about five months ago and is focused on his career, sources exclusively told E! News.
"He's healthy, happy and not drinking," one source said. "He's taking time to focus on working."
The 25-year-old actor recently walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film for the premiere of Parkland, his upcoming new ensemble drama about the JFK assassination.
"I'm good, real good," he said.
Jared Leto covers Rihanna's "Stay" and it's amazing: Wow, Jared Leto! During an appearance on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman covered Rihanna's hit "Stay" and applied his own unique style to the hit ballad. It's unreal. And we can't stop listening.
Michigan University Removes Pendulum Statue After Naked Students Used It to Recreate Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" Video: Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., used to boast a pendulum statue comprised of a 42-inch steel ball hanging on a 50-foot cable. That was before students used it to recreate Miley's infamous "Wrecking Ball" music video. Total Frat Move reports, "After several naked Vines imitating Miley Cyrus, Grand Valley State University has taken down the pendulum structure better known as the GV Wrecking Ball, a campus landmark that had been up for years."
Oh and the pictures and videos are hysterical.
Chris Brown calls Jay Z out in new interview, says he gets a thug pass
In the latest issue of Jet magazine Chris Brown wonders why Jay Z gets a pass for stabbing someone and selling drugs but he doesn't get a pass for beating the heck out of Rihanna.
Chris Brown tells Jet magazine...
"No disrespect, because I'm a fan, but nobody brings up the fact that [Jay Z] stabbed somebody and sold drugs. He gets a pass."
In 2001, Jay Z got three years probation for stabbing record producer, Lance 'Un' Rivera, for leaking his album Vol.3...Life and Times of S. Carter one month before its release date. Jay Z explained what happened that night. Continue...
But first, more from Chris Brown's Jet magazine interview
On his relationships with Karrueche Tran and Rihanna:
"Relationships are the most difficult part. That's why I was honest with those two girls and I put out that video. My ex and I broke up because of the "situation" and she had moved on. I fell in love with another girl. Then my ex came back, so it was like, 'What is a man to do?' I told them both the truth. I didn't do the sucker role."
Read the full interview when the issue hits stands Monday, Sept. 23.
On the media:
"The media is full of yellow journalism. A lot of things I say, they will flip it. Instead of them getting off on all the positive stuff that I do, they will bring out the negative and draw out that story."

Now to Jay Z. In an excerpt from Jay Z's new book, Decoded, he explains what happened the night he stabbed record producer Lance "Un" Rivera.
From the NY Post
He says he was infuriated because someone had leaked a bootleg copy of "Vol. 3 . . . Life and Times of S. Carter" more than a month before the release date of the album.
When he asked who was behind the leak, everyone kept repeating the same name: Rivera.
When Jay-Z saw him at rapper Q-Tip's album release party at the Kit Kat Klub, he confronted him. Rivera "got real loud with me right there in the middle of the club," Jay-Z writes, "It was strange. We separated and I went over to the bar . . . I was . . . in a state of shock . . . I headed back over to him, but this time I was blacking out with anger."
After this, chaos ensued in the club, "That night the guy went straight to the police and I was charged with assault."
He says he decided to plead guilty after watching Puff Daddy's trial on weapons violations that same year. Puffy was acquitted, and Jay-Z says he feared the state would be harder on him after failing to convict his friend.
"The hilarious thing," he writes, "if any of this can be considered funny, is that the Rocawear bubble coat I was wearing when they paraded me in front of the cameras started flying off the shelves the last three weeks before Christmas
Billy Ray Cyrus on his daughter: 'That's still my Miley
She might have had the world talking after her controversial appearance at MTV's Video Music Awards last month, but to at least one person, Miley Cyrus is still just who she is.
"She's just Miley," her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, told CNN's "Piers Morgan Live."
"She's an artist. She's real. I think that what's happened over the years, Miley has been reinventing her sound. She's evolving as an artist herself. I think that all of what everyone is calling controversy now, that's still my Miley," he said.
Billy Ray Cyrus spoke at length Thursday night about his daughter's performance at the VMAs.
You know the one.
Wearing a flesh-toned bra and matching underwear, Miley Cyrus appeared on stage with gigantic, dancing bears and stunned the crowd by grinding against singer-songwriter Robin Thicke and yes -- twerking.
The performance was a far cry from her Disney days as "Hannah Montana."
Billy Ray Cyrus said he had known his daughter planned to do "something really special" at the VMAs to get everyone talking.
"Miley's smart enough to know that to come out of the shadows of 'Hannah Montana,' it really takes something extremely drastic, which when you go to that level, it creates passion, and passion is either love or hate. But there's no middle of the road for passion," he said, adding that the performance pushed his daughter to new heights.
"She has risen to a whole new level. I thought I had seen it all -- until these last couple of weeks," he told CNN's Morgan. Cher slams Miley Cyrus, but feels 'ashamed' for her comments

"I Wanted To Be A Reverend Sister Before BBA" - Beverly Osu Reveals
Big Brother Africa 2013 finalist, Beverly Osu who represented Nigeria and became one of the most talked-about housemate has now revealed that being controversial has never been her goal.
In a recent interview on Abuja, she talks about life before the house and what her future plans her.
Read Excerpts:
Life before Big Brother:
Before Big Brother, I was into entertainment. Big Brother Africa was just a platform for me to do what I wanted to do. Before now, I wanted to be an actress, I wanted to be a reverend sister, but things did not just work out the way I planned it.
Being a controversial housemate:
Going to the house, I didn't have any plan or strategy. I just went in there. While in the house, I used to be blunt every time, it used to be me living my normal life. The controversial side, I don't know because I used to be a very sweet person.
On how she was never up for eviction:
I didn't do anything. I know that people picked my name but I wasn't bothered because I also got to pick one or two people. I knew when Natasha or anybody else picked me for eviction but I understood it was just a game. However, I was generally liked in the house because I'm a people's person.
On her relationship with Angelo
Me and Angelo were so business minded people, we think alike, we do a lot of things together. We have projects we are working on together so, it was much like we went to BBA as individuals but we didn't come there to mark time. And now, we have a platform we have to use. Now, he is in his country but when there is something to do, we will go together. It is not that we won't have our time but it's more of the business because we all came for something in our lives and since we have gotten the opportunity, we should use it right.
Her future plans:
School, my career-acting, so many things in next year let me feel I'm not sure what to say next because my voice is Ok
REVEALED: Real Reason Why Federal Government Does Not Want ASUU Strike To End
Nigerian universities have been buffeted with agonising months of strikes for over a decade and until now, the story is pretty much the same. Government is still unwilling to give the education sector a shot in the arm.
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has been on strike since June 30 and has dialogued with FG over 11 times, albeit, inconclusively.
This underscores the lukewarm posture of government towards the striking lecturers and from ASUU's body language and utterances, they have made it abundantly clear to anyone who cares to listen that they are ready to continue the strike even if it takes years, insisting that their decision was adequately taken in a bid to revitalise Nigerian universities.
The bone of contention is lucid in itself. An agreement was reached in 2009 that all federal universities would require a total sum of N1.5 trillion spread over three years (2009-2011) to address the rot and decay in the universities.
But, in the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the union and the government in 2012, FG decided to extend the gesture to include both federal and state universities. After the 2012 review, it was agreed that instead of N1.5 trillion, FG would infuse a total of N1.3 trillion into the universities over four years.
Almost four years down the line, FG has refused to fulfill its end of the bargain. Rather than respond to the issues raised by the union that would ensure quick resolution to the imbroglio, government boycotted ASUU to summon a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of universities, offering them N130 billion with a matching order to lecturers to resume work immediately.
But the union is insisting that by throwing money at universities in that manner, government has repudiated the 2009 agreement it entered freely with the union and the 2012 MoU. ASUU is not making any fresh demand but has maintained that the 2009 agreement must be honoured.
It is ridiculous that government officials were quoted as saying ASUU's N1.3 trillion demand is capable of shutting down the country. No. Their insatiable and rapacious greed will.
The private jets in the presidential fleet can fly, centenary celebrations is a priority to government, there's enough money to pay humongous salaries and allowances to federal legislators and other political office holders, enough to forfeit to oil subsidy thieves, enough to pay militants bogus amnesty cheques and phantom contracts while they continue to bunker our crude oil like never before, there's enough money to beg Boko Haram to accept amnesty but there is no money for law abiding Nigerian students who want to eke out a living using university education as a stepping stone. It is this kind of attitude from the government that provokes the use of brute force by some regional groups to attract government's attention to their problems.
Government cannot claim it has no money to fulfill this agreement. A country with 109 senators earning about N19.6 billion a year, while N51.8 billion is spent on members of House of Representatives for the same period, totaling N71.4 billion.
This sum, N71.4 billion, represents 17.8 per cent of the N400bn yearly intervention fund recommended by the Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities. Surely, our lecturers and universities where they were trained deserve more.
When we talk of heath care, government official and the ruling elite go abroad for medical attention; we talk of bad roads, they fly private jets; we talk of power, they run their homes on 24-7 alternative electricity source; now we're talking Education, their wards are in some of the best universities abroad. There is no way the myriad of problems bedeviling the country can be tackled if the political elite don't feel the pangs.
That Mr. President has taken out time from his 'busy' schedule to constantly parley with the warring factions of his party, PDP, but has never sat down with ASUU members to chart a course for Nigeria's leaders of tomorrow clearly shows his priorities. Party affairs and chasing perceived enemies of his 2015 ambition around with apparatus of state are far more important things than bending over backwards to pander to the demands of the striking lecturers.
But then, government must take into cognisance the fact that, the longer the students remain at home, chances are that they will be lured into social vices. The aftermath can be disastrous for the state.
There are misplaced calls in some quarters for ASUU to be 'reasonable', accept FG's offer and return to classrooms. Others lambast them for being self-centered and unpatriotic. It is unfortunate that Nigerians are always looking for quick fix solutions to monumental problems. Less endowed countries like Ghana, Botswana and Angola are making giant strides on all fronts because the citizenry have at one point or the other insisted that the needful be done. Here, anything thrown at us is accepted with glee.
We must get our priorities right as a country. Government must curb its own excesses. Education must be given the attention it deserves. Education of the citizenry should not be subjected to any form of Negotiation. Negotiating the education of our leaders of tomorrow is more or less negotiating the future of the country.
Government deliberately wants the strike to linger, first, to blackmail the opposition. There have been several unsavoury comments from the government's divide of the negotiation table that ASUU has been infiltrated by moles from the opposition, alleging that the strike has lingered to gain political capital. That is how low this government can stoop. We have seen it before. It is an irresponsible and shameless government, one that lacks integrity and honesty that will blame the opposition for all its woes. It is unbecoming for the government of the day to continue to heap its failure on the doorstep of the opposition and ASUU strike is just another avenue to paint the opposition black before the public.
Second, is to send a strong signal to other unions who might be contemplating similar action to have a rethink. Perhaps, government thinks by acceding to ASUU's demands, other Labour unions might toe the same path at the slightest excuse.
Third, the ultimate aim of government is to paint a bad image of the association to Nigerians, at least, for as long as the strike persists. The Governor Gabriel Suswan-led NEEDS Report Implementation Committee mediating on behalf of the government has unfortunately taken a position that is false, dishonest, and calculated to misinform the public and cause disaffection towards the union.
Rather than seek cheap popularity, Governor Suswan and the rest of the FG team should tow the part of honour by asking
President Goodluck Jonathan to honour the 2009 agreement. There's no basis for turning the heat on ASUU and the campaign of calumny.
It calls for worry, that same government that has always maintained that 'our graduates are unemployable' and our universities churn out 'half-baked graduates' find it difficult to commit the much needed funds to revamp the universities
ASUU may end strike next week
Hope of an early resolution of the strike embarked on by the public universities’ lecturers rises as the Vice-President Namadi Sambo met with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities in Abuja on Thursday.
The meeting held behind closed doors had in attendance the supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie.
The union was led by its National President, Dr. Nasir Faggae, and two former Presidents of ASUU; Dr. Dipo Fasina and Dr. Abdullahi Sule-Kano.
Others at the meeting were the Vice-Chancellors of Bayero University Kano, Prof. Abdulrasheed Abubakar; Prof. Isaac Adewole of the University of Ibadan; and Prof. Muhammed Hamisu of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
It was however uncertain if yesterday’s discussion was fruitful as the two parties did not disclose the outcome of the meeting which lasted for two hours to journalists.
Fagge, however, told State House Correspondents that the union would make its position known after the National Executive Council meeting.
Wike assured Nigerians that students would soon return to school as government was ready to make sure all the contending issues were resolved as soon as possible.
But a source at the meeting, who pleaded anonymity, however, told one of our correspondents that going by the new offers made by the Federal Government, the strike might be called off within the next two weeks.
This, the source said, was because the Federal Government had agreed to inject fund to revitalize the university system.
“The meeting went well, the vice-president made some new offers that were different from what was on ground before. For instance, the Federal Government had agreed to start the injection of revitalisation fund into the university system starting with N100bn this year and N150bn in 2014 and this will continue until the university system is solid enough to stand.
The source, however, said that the ASUU team promised the vice-president that the union would make it decision on the strike known after its NEC meeting unconfirmed source said had been scheduled for Saturday.

142 corpses recovered after Boko Haram highway massacre
I'm sure you guys have been reading about all the killings perpetuated by Boko Haram in the past few days in the Northern part of the country. They are going to homes, highways and just killing people.
Just yesterday 142 bodies were discovered and evacuated from the highway and surrounding bushes in Borno state by officials of the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) after travelers were ambushed, removed from their cars and killed on the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway on Tuesday Sept 17th by Boko Haram members who dressed up as soldiers and set up checkpoints.
The officials said they believe there are more bodies they are yet to find but plan to keep searching.
The gunmen, said to be over 300 in number, also stormed Benisheikh town in Yobe state on Wednesday, killing civilians, soldiers, policemen and setting houses, cars and motor cycles ablaze.
The military post in the area and the local government secretariat were also attacked with rocket-propelled grenades.
The governor of the state promised people who lost loved ones or property N250,000 each as compensation and promised to rebuild the destroyed town. He described the attack as barbaric and un-Islamic.
The attack is believed to be in retaliation of a military strike on a Boko Haram camp last week that left about 150 members dead.

'Starved' Hamzah Khan's father asked police to intervene
The father of a boy who allegedly starved to death asked police to "keep an eye" on his mother, a court heard.
Amanda Hutton, 43, from Bradford, denies the manslaughter of her son Hamzah Khan, whose body was found in a cot almost two years after he died.
Bradford Crown Court has heard the four-year-old boy was found in a "mummified" state in September 2011.
On day three of the trial, the jury heard police were called to Ms Hutton's home eight times before his death.
Jurors also heard Hamzah's brother Qaiser Khan, 22, say he had seen his young sibling eating the contents of his own nappy and sleeping in a buggy that smelled of urine.
'Get a doctor'
Details of a police interview conducted with Hamzah's father Aftab Khan recorded in December 2008, a year before the child's death on 15 December 2009, were read to the court.
Mr Khan had been arrested on suspicion of violence towards his former partner, Ms Hutton, but told officers: "You've got to keep an eye on that woman.
"All I want you to do is get a doctor to check Hamzah, check how undernourished he is, check how neglected he is, see how he is. "
Jurors also heard how Mr Khan told police Ms Hutton was an alcoholic and there were vodka bottles all over the house.
He said she would not let him take Hamzah to a doctor and that she was "overpowering" and "an alcoholic".
In the interview he warned police: "When it all comes out I'll come back and see you and say I told you so... you guys are not listening."
Mr Khan also told officers he would contact social services. The court was told that there was no record of a phone call being made to social services.
'Appeared neglected'
The jury also heard that officers from West Yorkshire Police visited Ms Hutton's home but no further action was taken.
Qaiser Khan initially refused to answer any questions put to him in court but was told by the judge he was obliged to give evidence.
He told the court how he went to the house between December 2008 and March 2009 and saw Hamzah sleeping upright in a urine-soaked buggy that "stank".
Qaiser Khan said his brother was left in a dirty nappy and he saw him eating the contents.
"Hamzah appeared neglected," he said.
The court heard he had sent a text message sent from his phone to Hutton in December 2008 saying he would report her for child neglect and abuse.
Qaiser Khan said he did not remember sending it.
Asked by Stephen Meadowcroft QC, defending, if he was exaggerating what was happening at the house because he had a bad relationship with his mother, he replied: "I've seen this with my own eyes."
The trial continues.

Pope Francis: Church too focused on gays and abortion
Pope Francis has said the Catholic Church is too focused on preaching about abortion, gay people and contraception and needs to become more merciful.
He warned that the Church's moral structure could "fall like a house of cards" unless it changed.
The Pope used the first major interview of his papacy to explain comments he made in July about homosexuality.
He told a Jesuit magazine the Church must show balance and "heal wounds".
The pontiff used the 12,000-word interview with La Civilta Cattolicato to set out his priorities as Pope, acknowledge his own shortcomings and open up about his cultural interests.
'Freshness and fragrance'
His vision for relegating the Catholic Church's reliance on rules marks a contrast to the priorities of his predecessors, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, who saw doctrine as the paramount guide for clergy
"The church's pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently," Francis said.
"We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel."
Instead, he said, the Catholic Church must work to heal the wounds of its faithful and seek out those who have been excluded or have fallen away.
"It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars," he said. "You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else."
He said the Church had become tied up in "small-minded rules" and risked losing its true purpose.
"The most important thing is the first proclamation: Jesus Christ has saved you. And the ministers of the Church must be ministers of mercy above all.''
His remarks are could generate dismay among clergy in the United States who have already expressed disappointment that Francis has not pressed Church teaching on abortion, contraception and homosexuality.
Last week, Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island, wrote in his diocesan newspaper that he was "disappointed" Francis hadn't addressed abortion since his papacy began six months ago, according to AP.
Francis said it was not necessary to speak out on such issues.
'Home of all'
"We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible,'' he said.
"The teaching of the Church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the Church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time.''
Francis created headlines two months ago when he spoke about gay priests during an impromptu news conference on a return flight from Brazil. He said it was not up to him to judge about the sexual orientation of clergy as long as they were searching for God and had goodwill.
In his latest interview, Francis said his remarks were in line with Catholic teaching.
"This Church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal Church to a nest protecting our mediocrity,'' he said.
Francis also used the interview to detail his favourite composers, artists, authors and films, which include Mozart, Caravaggio, Dostoevsky and Fellini's La Strada.

Frustration Sets In As Boko Haram Attacks Motorists, Burns Houses And Shops
Suspected Islamist insurgents dressed in military uniforms set up checkpoints in an attack in Nigeria’s northeast, killing an unclear number of people and burning dozens of buildings, residents and authorities said Wednesday.
The attack on Tuesday evening in the Benishiek community in Borno state saw suspected members of Islamist extremist group Boko Haram invade the area, attacking residents and motorists.
A Borno state government official said at least five local residents were killed in addition to an unclear number of motorists travelling through the area, while about 50 buildings housing shops and homes were burnt.
“Based on the information at hand, only five residents of the area were killed,” said Garba Ngamdu, an adviser to the state governor.
“A large chunk of the victims were motorists travelling on the highway, although we do not have a tentative figure yet.”
An army spokesman confirmed the attack and said a number of residents and tanker drivers had been killed, but declined to provide further details.
Residents recounted seeing bodies along the roadside and said the attackers were singling out those from Borno state.
The reason why was not immediately clear, but Boko Haram members have repeatedly carried out revenge attacks against residents over the emergence of vigilante groups that have formed to assist the military.
“The militants arrived in military vans and uniforms around 6:00 pm (1700 GMT),” Mallam Isa Manu, a motorist who escaped unhurt, told journalists in the Borno state capital Maiduguri.
“They set up checkpoints on the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway and ordered motorists to park and identify themselves

Nigerian wins World Muslim beauty pageant
JAKARTA (AFP) – A Nigerian woman tearfully prayed and recited Koranic verses as she won a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women in the Indonesian capital Wednesday, a riposte to the Miss World contest that has sparked hardline anger.
The 20 finalists, who were all required to wear headscarves, put on a glittering show for the final of Muslimah World, strolling up and down a catwalk in elaborately embroidered dresses and stilettos.
INDONESIA, JAKARTA : The newly crowned the Muslimah World 2013 Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola (C) of Nigeria speaks to audience during the Muslimah World competition in Jakarta on September 18, 2013. The finale of a beauty pageant exclusively for Muslim women was set to take place in the Indonesian capital on September 18, in a riposte to the Miss World contest in Bali that has drawn fierce opposition from Islamic radicals. AFP PHOTO
But the contestants from six countries were covered from head to foot, and as well as beauty they were judged on how well they recited Koranic verses and their views on Islam in the modern world.
After a show in front of an audience of mainly religious scholars and devout Muslims, a panel of judges picked Obabiyi Aishah Ajibola from Nigeria as the winner.
While the event in a Jakarta shopping mall paled in comparison to Miss World on the resort island of Bali, in which scores of contestants are competing, Ajibola was nevertheless overwhelmed.
Upon hearing her name, the 21-year-old knelt down and prayed, then wept as she recited a Koranic verse.
She said it was “thanks to almighty Allah” that she had won the contest. She received 25 million rupiah ($2,200) and trips to Mecca and India as prizes.
Ajibola told AFP before the final that the event “was not really about competition”.
“We’re just trying to show the world that Islam is beautiful,” she said.
Organisers said the pageant challenged the idea of beauty put forward by the British-run Miss World pageant, and also showed that opposition to the event could be expressed non-violently.
Eka Shanti, who founded the pageant three years ago after losing her job as a TV news anchor for refusing to remove her headscarf, bills the contest as “Islam’s answer to Miss World”.
“This year we deliberately held our event just before the Miss World final to show that there are alternative role models for Muslim women,” she told AFP.
“But it’s about more than Miss World. Muslim women are increasingly working in the entertainment industry in a sexually explicit way, and they become role models, which is a concern.”
Hosted by Dewi Sandra, an Indonesian actress and pop star who recently hung up her racy dresses for a headscarf, the pageant featured both Muslim and pop music performances, including one about modesty, a trait the judges sought in the winner.
The pageant, which also featured bright Indonesian Islamic designer wear, is a starkly different way of protesting Miss World than the approach taken by Islamic radicals.
Snowballing protest movement
Thousands have taken to the streets in Indonesia in recent weeks to protest Miss World, denouncing the contest as “pornography” and burning effigies of the organisers.
Despite a pledge by Miss World organisers to drop the famous bikini round, radical anger was not appeased and the protest movement snowballed.
The government eventually bowed to pressure and ordered the whole pageant be moved to the Hindu-majority island of Bali, where it opened on September 8.
Later rounds and the September 28 final were to be held in and around Jakarta, where there is considerable hardline influence.
But there are still fears that extremists may target the event — the US, British and Australian embassies in Jakarta have warned their nationals in recent days of the potential for radical attacks.
More than 500 contestants competed in online rounds to get to the Muslimah World final in Indonesia, one of which involved the contenders comparing stories of how they came to wear the headscarf.
The contest was first held in 2011 under a different name and was only open to Indonesians, Shanti said, but after the media began comparing it to Miss World, it was rebranded as a Muslim alternative to the world-famous pageant.
Because of its popularity, organisers accepted foreign contestants this year for the first time, with Iran, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Brunei, Nigeria and Indonesia represented.

Redeemed Church battles Christ Embassy over land
If you call it a holy war, you might not be far from the truth. Right now, all is not well between two popular Pentecostal churches in Nigeria. And the cause of the feud? A parcel of land.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which has Pastor E.A. Adeboye as General Overseer, and Christ Embassy, headed by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, are involved in a big fight over a parcel of land situated along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The land, which the Redeemed Church claims it owns, is spread across Oloke, Asese, Maba and Gideon villages in Ogun State. RCCG says Christ Embassy has been using policemen and hoodlums to cause trouble on the land.
Authorities of the Redeemed Church are, therefore, appealing to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. M.D. Abubakar, to use his good offices to avert an impending crisis in the villages. According to the church, a structure put up there by RCCG was earlier in the year demolished by some alleged land grabbers working for Christ Embassy.
The church noted that the appeal to the IG had become necessary so that the nation’s top cop could help resolve the matter, even as it accused the other church of deliberately employing delay tactics to frustrate the rightful owners of the land.
The crisis, it was gathered, has been on for long before reaching a head in March this year.
According to the RCCG, hoodlums, armed with dangerous weapons, (allegedly led by one Lukman Jimoh, aka Ogo Oluwa), and purportedly acting on the instructions of the Christ Embassy Church, had on March 19, this year, invaded the villages in a Volvo car and Toyota Hiace bus, destroying the headquarters of Ogun Province 8 of The Redeemed Christian Church of God under construction.
The Redeemed Church informed that the guard at the site, who reportedly escaped death by the whiskers, said the hoodlums told him to stay clear of the land, adding that the property belonged to the Christ Embassy which they were working for.
“The thugs threatened to kill me or anybody who stood in their way and boasted that nothing would happen because, according to them, they and the police have been “heavily settled,” the guard was quoted as saying.
In a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police, the RCCG asked the IG to intervene in the case of trespass on the church land and the malicious damage to the church property.
RCCG said it had done everything within the ambit of the law to possess the land. The church said despite the fact that the land falls under the government acquisition area, the church had, in June 1999, paid ratification fees for the land to the late Alhaji Tajudeen Ogo Oluwa (Lukman’s father), who subsequently gave the church a Deed of Surrender signed by him and witnessed by one Waidi Ogunsesan (aka Damolapa).
The church said it was also given allocation of the land for 99 years by the Ogun State Government, in a letter with reference number LUD 9/LCI33/6, signed by the Director-General, Bureau of Lands and Survey, Surveyor Gbenga Ogunnoike.
Ogun State also issued a Certificate of Occupancy with the Number 025748, dated November 7, 2006 and signed by the governor, to the RCCG.
It was also gathered that, in 2004, the Redeemed Christian Church of God wrote to the Presiding Pastor of the Christ Embassy Church, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, following a programme held by the latter on the disputed land.
The letter, signed by the Assistant General Overseer, Admin/Personnel of the RCCG, Pastor A. O. Akindele, partly reads: “It has come to our notice that your organization is inadvertently trespassing on the piece of land measuring about forty acres (40 acres) along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, precisely at Oloke Area.
“We wish to inform you that this parcel of land belongs to the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and we have seized (sic) of the land for more than four years.
“We shall appreciate your prompt intervention and godly directive to one Alhaji Ogo Oluwa, who has held himself out as your agent, to desist forthwith in continuing with the trespass.”
The RCCG, it was learnt, also went ahead to solicit the help of officials of the Ogun State Government who invited the two parties with a view to settling the dispute. At the meeting, presided over by the then Director General, Bureau of Lands and Survey, Mr. Gbenga Ogunnoike and held at the Bureau’s office at Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, the state government affirmed that the Redeemed Christian Church of God which has the duly issued Certificate of Occupancy of the land, is the rightful owner. The meeting also warned the Christ Embassy from further trespassing on the land.
But the Redeemed Church said it was shocked that in spite of the resolution, the Christ Embassy Church and its agents still went ahead to demolish the structure put up on the land, which prompted the church to write to the Inspector General.
The IG, it was learnt, directed the Eleweran Police headquarters in Ogun State to quickly resolve the matter. But RCCG said nothing tangible has been achieved since. According to the church, the hoodlums, who boasted that nothing would come out of the matter, were already being proved right.
“Meanwhile, the hoodlums are still occupying the land and they keep threatening the other owner families of other plots of land who are ready to act as witnesses for the church,” the RCCG noted.
Attempts by our correspondent to reach Christ Embassy officials were unfruitful.

UniLagos Student Scientifically Proves Gay Marriage Unnatural
A post graduate student of the University of Lagos claims he scientifically proved that gay marriage is wrong.
"I was the first to publish report about the 2006 total solar eclipse in the newspaper in Nigeria when I was writing for the defunct New Age newspaper," Chibuihem Amalaha says.
"I also reported the true situation about the 2010 acid rain in Nigeria. I carried out analysis and found out that there was nothing like cancer of the skin attributed to the acid rain, and by 2011, I emerged the best science reporter in Nigeria where I won Nigeria Media Merit Award in the energy category as a science editor with Compass newspapers."
"Ever since then I have been doing a lot of researches in the country. There are many discoveries and inventions I have made in science and technology.
Gay marriage is spreading
"In recent time, I found that gay marriage, which is homosexuality and lesbianism, is eating deep into the fabric of our human nature all over the world, and this was why nations of Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed by God: because they were into gay practice. That is, a man marrying another man and a woman marrying another woman.
"A recent publication on May 3, 2013 shows that France is the 14th country in the world that have legalised gay marriage. I asked myself why should a man be marrying a man and a woman marrying a woman, does it mean that there is no more female for a man to marry or there is no more male for a woman to marry?
"And recently, Britain told Nigeria to legalise gay marriage of forfeit international aid. I thank God for our lawmakers who refused to sign the bill legalising gay marriage. And so God gave me the wisdom to use science as a scientist to prove gay marriage wrong.
"In the area of physics, I used physics with experiments, I used chemistry with experiments, I used biology with experiments and I used mathematics to prove gay marriage wrong.
Physics of Gay Marriage
"To start with, physics is one of the most fundamentals of all the sciences and I used two bar magnets in my research.
"A bar magnet is a horizontal magnet that has the North Pole and the South Pole and when you bring two bar magnets and you bring the North Pole together you find that the two North Poles will not attract. They will repel, that is, they will push away themselves showing that a man should not attract a man.
{read_more}
"If you bring two South Poles together you find that the two South Poles will not attract indicating that same sex marriage should not hold. A female should not attract a female as South Pole of a magnet does not attract the South Pole of a magnet. But, when you bring a North Pole of a magnet and a South Pole of a magnet they will attract because they are not the same, indicating that a man will attract a woman because of the way nature has made a female.
"Even in physics when you study what is called electrostatics, you found that when you rub particles together they don't attract each other but when you rub particle in another medium they will attract each other.
Chemistry of Gay Marriage
"In chemistry, I used chemical reactions and we have different types of chemical reactions. We have double decomposition reaction, decomposition reaction, neutralisation reaction and reduction oxidation reaction.
"I used a simple one known as neutralisation reaction, which is a reaction where an acid reacts with a base to give you salt and water. For example, when you bring surphuric acid and you reacts it with sodium hydroxide which is a base you are going to have salt and water. That tells you that the acid is a different body, the base is a different body and they will react.
"But if you bring an acid and you pour it on top of an acid chemistry there will be no reaction. If you bring water and pour it on top it shows that there will be no reaction. If you bring a base either sodium hydroxide and you pour it on top of a sodium hydroxide you find out that there will be reaction showing that a man on top of a man will have no reaction.
"A woman on top of a woman will have no reaction, that is what chemistry is showing.
"When you also use a process called electrolysis, which is if you use electrolysis of acidilated water, that is water you drop some droplets of acid on it, you find that the negative ions will be attracted to the positive ones while the positive ions will be attracted to the negative ones. So the negative ones are not attracted to their peers, they are all attracted to the positive electrode, and the positive ones are not attracted to the positive electrode. Instead, the negative ion is attracted to positive electrodes. And why is it that the negative is attracted to the positive? It is because they are not the same.
"Likewise, a man cannot be attracted to a man as negative ion is not attracted to the negative electrode instead negative ion is attracted to the positive electrode. That is what electrolysis is showing us that gay marriage is wrong in the area of chemistry.
Biology of Gay Marriage
"In biology, I used simple experiments and I came down to a lay man. We have seen that the female of a fowl is called hen and the male of a fowl is called a cock. We have never seen where a cock is having sex with a cock and we have never seen where a hen is having sex with another. Even among lions, when you go to the zoo, you find out that lion does not mate with a lion instead a lion will mate with a lioness showing that a lion being a male will mate with lioness being a female.
"Now, if animals that are of even lower creature understand so much, how come human being made in the higher image of God that is even of higher creature will be thinking of a man having sex with another and woman having sex with another woman?
"That shows that it's a misnomer, and when you come to real biological standard, when you see a lady you love there is what is called the follicle stimulating hormone. The follicle stimulating hormone in a man triggers what is called spermatogenesis through your brain which is called hypothalamus. It will send message to your brain when you see a lady you love and through the hypothalamus you will go after the lady. And it will trigger your spermatogenesis and the lady's host follicles stimulating hormone will be triggered by the hypothalamus and it will stimulate her ovarian follicle. So in the man is the spermatogenesis, in female it's the ovarian follicle. You find out that the sperm alone does not produce a child and the ovary alone in the female does not produce a child. They need each other for reproduction to occur and the follicle stimulating hormone in the man and that of the female promote different things. The sperm in the man alone doesn't produce a child and ovary in the female alone does not produce a child, they need each other for reproduction to occur. So that shows how biology proves that gay marriage is wrong."
Mathematics of Gay Marriage
"In mathematics, which is another core area of science, I used what is called the principle of commutativity and idepotency. Commutativity in mathematics is simply the arrangement of numbers or arrangement of letters in which the way you arrange them doesn't matter.
"For example, if you say A + B in mathematics you are going to have B + A.
"For example, if I say two plus three it will give five. If I start from three, I say three plus two it also give you five showing that two plus three and three plus two are commutative because they gave the same results. That shows that A + B will give you B + A, you see that there is a change. In A + B, A started the journey while in B + A, B started the journey.
"If we use A as a man and use B as a woman we are going to have B + A that is woman and man showing that there is a reaction. A + B reacted, they interchanged and gave us B + A showing that commutativity obeys that a man should not marry a man and a woman should not marry a woman.
"If you use idempotency, it's a reaction in mathematics where A + A = A. Actually in abstract algebra, A + A =2A, but we are less concerned with the numerical value two. We are more or less concerned with the symbols A. You find out that A + A will give you AYou find out that A + A will give you A showing that the whole thing goes unchanged. It didn't change, unlike commutativity A + B give B + A, there is a change.
"But in the case of idempotency, A + A will give you A, showing that it goes unreacted. You started with A and you meet A, the final result is A. Showing that a man meeting a man, A + A, will produce a man -- there is no reaction, it goes unreacted, and in chemical engineering you have to send the material back to the reactor for the action to be carried out again showing that it goes unreacted.
That is how mathematics has shown that gay marriage is wrong because commutativity proves that gay marriage is wrong.
"So these are the principles I have used to prove gay marriage wrong in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and by the grace of God I am the only one that has proved this in the whole world.
"If you go on the Internet to check whether there is anybody who has used physics to prove gay marriage wrong, you find out there is none. You go to Google or Youtube, check whether there is anybody that has used chemistry to find same sex marriage wrong, you find out there is none and the same applies to biology and mathematics.
"In general, same sex marriage is evil. It should be stopped by those practicing it. Now they are saying that they will go and adopt a child, the question is that if everybody shows interest in same sex marriage where would the child they are adopting come from?"
His Commendations
"At the University of Lagos, where I currently study as a student, you will find my publication on the notice board there. When you go to the Senate Building of the university you will see the same notice there. And even recently my lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Profesor D.S. Aribuike pointedly told me that I will win Nobel prize one day, because he found that my works are real and nobody has done it in any part of the world.
"You know Nobel Prize is the highest award anyone could ever win, and no African has won Nobel Prize in science. So I am aspiring to win Nobel Prize for Africa.
"Other universities have seen my work and sent me commendations. I have a professor friend who has seen the work I did and he sent me congratulatory message because of the originality of the work."
His Next Step
"I want to be able to publish it in international journals. The finance has been a problem in this area because I found out that you you have to pay in dollars for international journals to publish you. You know finance is a factor and I don't have money to start paying in US dollars and I need sponsors so that I can pay for the journals to be published."
CHILD MARRIAGE: Yemen Minister Wants It Outlawed
After an 8-year-old girl reportedly died of internal injuries that she suffered on her wedding night in Yemen, the country's human rights minister, Hooria Mashhour, said child marriage should be outlawed.
The reports emerged last week that a girl named Rawan, from the northern Yemeni town of Haradh, dieda few days after being married off to a 40-year-old man.
International scandal quickly grew, as the alleged incident has once again brought attention to the extremely controversial issue of child marriage in Yemen.
Till now child marriage in Yemen is still legal.
Against a background of the numerous claims and counterclaims, Mashhour has declared enough is enough. She told CNN that the growing anger over the sad Rawan's case has given Yemen an opportunity to "end this practice."
"I personally have (talked to) the human rights coordinator for the ministry on the ground in Haradh,"said Mashhour, "and he informed me that nearly everyone he spoke to is denying the story, but he feels strongly suspicious. We feel people may be hiding information due to fear."
CNN spoke with several locals who requested anonymity, as they feared possible reprisals. "No one is talking about this story because its an embarrassment, but this is what poverty can do to people," said one of the residents.
Child marriage in Yemen
In deeply tribal and conservative Yemen, according to rights group Human Rights Watch , more than half of all young girls there are married before age 18.About 14% of girls in Yemen are married before age 15.
In 2009,Yemen's parliament passed legislation raising the minimum age of marriage to 17, but conservative parliamentarians argued the bill violated Islamic law, which does not stipulate a minimum age of marriage, and the bill was never signed.
Several Yemeni child bride cases have emerged that have shocked the world over the last few years. In 2008, 10-year-old Nujood Ali became an international sensation when she went to a court in Sanaa and asked for a divorce. After a highly publicized trial, her demand was met.
In 2010, a 12-year-old Yemeni bride died of internal bleeding following intercourse three days after she was married off to an older man, according to the United Nations Children's Fund
Nobody delivered baby on board our flight – Arik
Arik Air has debunked claims by a section of the media (notThe Punch) that a woman gave birth on board its flight from Lagos.
A statement by Arik on Monday explained that contrary to claims that the pregnant woman gave birth aboard the flight on Sunday, the woman only suffered a miscarriage.
The statement signed by Arik’s Public Relations and Communications Manager, Mr. Adebanji Ola, also stated that the woman in question was 12 weeks pregnant.
The statement said, “The Arik Air flight W3 101 which departed Lagos for London Heathrow on Sunday, diverted to Palma Mallorca Airport, Spain at 5:44pm due to urgent medical attention for a 12-week pregnant woman on board.
“The passenger reportedly developed severe pain during the course of the flight. The pain was later coupled with bleeding with a suspected miscarriage.
“The passenger, who was initially attended to by two medical doctors on board the flight, was 12 weeks pregnant. She was later transferred to a hospital in Mallorca for further medical attention. This is contrary to a report in some papers to the effect that a woman gave birth on board Arik flight to London.”
The statement added that the flight later departed Mallorca at 8pm for London Heathrow.
The statement explained that the pregnant woman did not indicate her pregnancy status to the airline’s Passenger Service Agents at check-in and because her pregnancy was 12 weeks, the team didn’t notice her status.
Blackface reacts to Tuface’s alledged wedding invitation
Against the backdrop of the recent interview where 2face alleged he had invited Blackface to his wedding,Blackface has reacted in an interview with Abuja based radio station Hotfm stating that 2face keeps avoiding him for reasons best known to him.
He says he’s been trying to get across to 2face to talk about his song African queen that has been sang by a Jamaican artist in the US without the right to do so…’ if someone sings that song it means someone gave out the right ’he keeps avoiding me cos he doesn’t want to talk about these issues.
For the wedding ‘he would have put the blame on his management and called me or something’ but till today since he returned from his wedding in Dubai, he hasn’t called me, my uncle whose house we stayed throughout the days of our musical career passed away during the time of his traditional marriage, then the white wedding he never called to even ask about my uncle or to sympathize with me, so there must be something wrong somewhere …it must be about the music money.
In any case Blackface has a new single titled ‘see you move’ enjoying airplay on some radio stations across the country.
Undergraduates, others arrested for stealing N2bn from Union bank
According to a report by Punch, two men who claim to be undergraduates of University of Jos, Isaiah Friday and Azzaior Samuel, have been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for allegedly stealing N2.05bn from union bank Two bureau de change operators, Salihu Mahmoud and Dan Ibrahim, were also arrested in connection with the alleged crime.
The Head, Media and Publicity, EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said:
"Their arrest comes on the heels of a petition which the commission received from Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, Marina, Lagos, in January 2013, alleging that a criminal attack had been launched on its data base known as 'Flexcube', by yet-to-be-identified criminals who falsified the bank records and accounts and created unjustified huge opening balances in several accounts across the bank's branches. They subsequently transferred funds from those accounts to several accounts in other banks. The petition, which was signed by one A.F Olufade, Head of Fraud Investigation at the bank, said cash withdrawals and electronic transfers totalling N2.05bn was involved in the scam."
It was learnt that EFCC initial investigation showed that Friday, who was carrying out computer system maintenance services for one of the Union Bank branches in Jos, Plateau State, on a part-time basis, paved the way for the fraudsters to penetrate the bank's database.
Uwujaren said, "Friday was traced and arrested. His arrest led to the arrest of Azaaior Samuel.
"Investigations further revealed that Samuel introduced Friday to Mahmoud, who is the mastermind of the fraud with others now at large.
"Mahmoud and other collaborators told Friday that they needed access to the bank's database in order to carry out some postings. They promised to give Friday N.5m if the deal succeeded."
PUNCH Metro gathered that Friday agreed. On the day the crime was committed, he told people at the bank that Samuel was his colleague who had accompanied him to work.
It was learnt that after the gang had succeeded in gaining access to the bank's premises, it carried out the postings to six different company accounts domiciled in Union Bank's Marina branch in Lagos.
Uwujaren said, "The accounts are Gona Bureau De Change Limited, Jaxmine Bureau De Change Limited, Dan Kawu Bureau De Change Limited, Godswill Great Communications, ZHG Services Limited and A and B Console Limited. The postings were carried out and the syndicate thereafter went to the bank to withdraw all the funds. Friday was paid as promised and other syndicate members now at large shared the remaining balance."
The EFCC spokesman added that the commission had been able to recover $2,129,900 and another N134,542, from the fraudsters.
He said, "Other items recovered are furniture worth N10m from Salihu Liman's one bedroom apartment in Yaba, Lagos; four vehicles, landed properties in Kano and Kaduna and a four-bedroom duplex worth N45m in Lagos. Investigation into the scam continues."

Muslim woman must remove veil to give trial evidence
A Muslim woman can stand trial wearing a full-face veil but must remove it to give evidence, a judge has ruled.
Judge Peter Murphy made the ruling at Blackfriars Crown Court in London where the woman is due to stand trial accused of intimidating a witness.
The 22-year-old woman, from Hackney, has refused to remove her niqab and reveal her face in front of any man.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty at an earlier hearing.
The judge's ruling means that if the woman, who started wearing a veil in May 2012, refuses to comply during her trial she could be jailed for contempt of court.
The only part of a niqab-wearer's face that is visible is a narrow section across the eyes.
The judge said he would offer the woman a screen to shield her from public view while giving evidence but that she had to be seen by him, the jury and lawyers.
At other times during the trial the woman will be allowed to keep her face covered while sitting in the dock.
'Elephant in courtroom'
In the ruling Judge Murphy said: "The ability of the jury to see the defendant for the purposes of evaluating her evidence is crucial."
Referring to the woman as "D", he said he had "no reason to doubt the sincerity of her belief" and his decision would have been the same if she had worn the niqab for years.
He said that "the niqab has become the elephant in the courtroom" and there was widespread anxiety among judges over how to tackle the issue.
He added he hoped "Parliament or a higher court will provide a definite answer to the issue soon".
Judge Murphy said: "If judges in different cases in different places took differing approaches [to the niqab] the result would be judicial anarchy."
The woman's defence barrister Susan Meek had argued the woman's human right to express her faith through her attire would be breached if she was ordered to remove her veil.
When asked if there would be an appeal against the decision, the woman's lawyer said she and her client would "consider our options".
At a previous hearing, the issue of her identity was resolved when the woman removed her veil in private for a female police officer.
Judge Murphy's ruling comes as Liberal Democrat Home Office minister Jeremy Browne said he was "uneasy" about restricting freedoms and called for a national debate on the state's role in stopping veils being imposed on girls.
Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of the National Secular Society, said he believed it was "vital" defendants' faces were visible at "all times" and said he "regretted" the judge's decision.
He added: "We will be complaining to the Office of Judicial Complaints and also be asking senior legal officers to make visibility throughout court hearings mandatory, and not subject to judges' discretion."
The woman's trial over alleged witness intimidation is due to begin at Blackfriars Crown Court on 4 November.

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth Split: call off wedding
The wedding is off.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have ended their almost four-year relationship, the singer's rep confirms to E! News.
Sources say that the split was "Miley's decision, after coming to grips with Liam being what she believed was less than faithful to her."
As of Monday, the actor was in the process of moving out of Cyrus' Los Angeles home, an insider added.
Cyrus has been "doing good," focusing on her career milestones as of late (including breaking records on Vevo) and is "excited to launch her album in coming weeks."
The two were last spotted together on Aug. 8 at the red carpet premiere of Hemsworth's film, Paranoia, in Los Angeles.
He was notably absent during her controversial MTV VMA performance later that month.
And just over the weekend, things seemed to foreshadow today's news when the "Wrecking Ball" singer unfollowed her former fiancé on Twitter.
The couple has put even more distance between them lately with Cyrus promoting her upcoming album Bangerz in Europe while Liam was in Las Vegas for the Floyd Mayweather fight.
The breakup also comes on the heels of the "We Can't Stop" singer opening up about wedding plans in the most recent issue of Harper's Bazaar.
I definitely don't have time to deal with a wedding right now," she told the fashion mag. "But I will at some point."
Just last week, rumors swirled that Hemsworth had been going behind Cyrus' back and sexting Mad Men star January Jones.
And while his rep vehemently denied the reports calling them, "tabloid fiction," a source tells E! News that there is some truth to the reports of Hemsworth having an inappropriate relationship with Jones.
The two announced their engagement in 2012, when the former Disney darling was 19-years-old.
At the time, the teen bride-to-be told People, ""I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam."
The Hunger Games hottie proposed with a stunning 3.5-carat diamond ring from jeweler Neil Lane.
The former duo, who denied rumors of an engagement months before the Aussie actually popped the question, met back in 2009, when they costarred in The Last Song.
They also briefly called it quits back in August 2010 before getting back together.

Woman gives birth on board Arik flight to London, plane makes emergency landing
An Arik Air flight with over 100 passengers en route to London Sunday was forced to make an emergency landing in Palmas, Spain, as a woman went into labour and gave birth while the aircraft was airborne.
The pilot was said to have requested the emergency landing on the advice of two doctors who were on board the aircraft and had helped the mother deliver the baby. After the birth of the child, the mother, whose identity has so far been withheld, was said to have experienced excessive hemorrhaging, necessitating the emergency landing.
At the time of this report, both mother and child were said to have been stable but were left behind in Palmas for monitoring by medical personnel, while the flight continued on its journey to London.
On enquiry, ThisDay learnt that the airline was trying to ascertain if the woman had presented a false medical report from her doctor on the true duration of her pregnancy or she had gone into premature labour while on board the flight.
Women with full term pregnancies are not allowed to travel by air, according to International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations. As such, intending pregnant passengers are required to present medical reports certifying that they are less than 32 weeks pregnant before they are allowed to fly.
A source said the airline was carrying out a full-scale investigation to ascertain the genuineness of the medical report presented by the woman. Arik Air’s management said yesterday that if it is discovered that the woman was given a false report to enable her fly, it would file a special complaint against the doctor who had issued the medical report to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) for endangering her life and that of the baby, as well that of other passengers on board the flight.
ThisDay learnt that when the passenger went into labour, the cabin crew had asked that doctors on board the flight to identify themselves. Following the announcement, two of the passengers came forward, saying they were doctors and assisted in the delivery of the baby.
Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has disclosed that the Archbishop of Province of Niger Delta, Most Rev. Ignatius Kattey, was released unconditionally by his abductors.
Kattey and his wife, Beatrice, were abducted on September 6 at Eleme Junction on the East – West Road, while on their way to Port Harcourt from an official assignment.
While Beatrice was later freed, the gunmen took the archbishop away.
The Archdeacon of Eleme Archdeaconry, Venerable Israel Omosioni, told journalists that Kattey was looking healthy and agile, despite his ordeals.
Omosioni said the kidnappers gave Kattey N200 as transport fare, which he used to take a motorcycle back home.
He said: “Kattey was released unconditionally and he is in good health. He is hale and hearty.’’
Also the church said contrary to the claims of the Rivers State Police Command, policemen were not involved in Kattey’s rescue.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe, had said in Port Harcourt that Kattey was rescued by the police at 8p.m. on Saturday.
But the church said the kidnappers on their own released the cleric, without involving any other party.
The church said Kattey was brought out to the expressway via the same footpath, which the kidnappers used in abducting him, and took him to a petrol station across the road.
Also, a knight of the church, Sir Okafor Efiebor, told our correspondent that the police were not involved in Kattey’s release.
Efiebor said the kidnappers responded to the pleas of the church and its members by releasing the cleric unconditionally.
He said: “It (his release) happened on Saturday night, around 8pm. The kidnappers brought him out to the East – West Road, through the same foot path, which they used in abducting him.
“They took him to the Total Filling Station beside the spot and left after, giving him a token. This is after they have apologised to him for the inconvenience caused him.’’
On Sunday last week, the church, led by its clergymen, demanded the bishop’s unconditional release and told the world that it would not pay any ransom for his release.
On the following day, the church members, led by their leaders, staged a peaceful protest on the spot where Kattey was abducted; demanding his immediate release.
Yesterday, Agabe confirmed that Kattey had been rescued.
She said: “The command is not aware that any ransom was paid and the bishop is in stable condition.”
The police imagemaker, however, said no arrest had been made in connection with Kattey’s abduction
Miss New York Nina Davuluri Crowned as Miss America
The crown has been placed on Nina Davuluri's head.
The Miss New York contestant, who was in the middle of some pageant drama, was named as Miss America for 2014 during the annual show, which was held in Atlantic City, N.J., tonight.
Davuluri, 24, from Syracuse, walked away with the blingtastic tiara and the $50,000 scholarship cash after performing a Bollywood dance for the talent portion of the show and answering a question about plastic surgery and shared her hopes of becoming a doctor.
During the question part of the pageant, Davuluri was asked by Carla Hall about Julie Chen's decision to have plastic surgery to make her eyes less Asian.
"I don't agree with plastic surgery, however I can understand that from a standpoint. More importantly I've always viewed Miss America as the girl next door. And Miss America is always evolving...I wouldn't want to change someone's looks. Be confident in who you are," she said.
Miss California Crystal Lee was chosen as the first runner-up, who will take over Miss America duties should Davuluri not be able to, and Miss Oklahoma Kesley Griswold was second runner-up

Happy Birthday, Prince Harry! Royal Hunk Turns 29
It's a special day for Prince Harry!
The handsome young royal and new uncle is celebrating his 29th birthday today, but it seems as though Prince William's li'l brother is choosing to keep his festivities private.
There haven't been any reports detailing what Harry has chosen to do for his big day, but considering what a busy year he's had, it wouldn't be a surprise if he decided to just relax with his close friends and family and do something small.
Along with taking on the new title of Uncle Harry to the precious Prince George, the royal has been keeping busy with maintaining a long list of appearances and events.
Earlier this week, Harry was the guest of honor at an awards ceremony put on by WellChild, a charity he patronizes that supports sick children and their families, and that was just one stop on the day's agenda.
He also attended a fundraiser with Wills in honor of the 658 BGC Partners employees who were killed on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center. The brothers even took a turn at the trading desk themselves and helped broker a 25 billion euro transaction.
Here's to hoping this busy bee had an amazing day!
Liam Hemsworth seems to be taking Miley Cyrus' Twitter diss in stride.
Liam Hemsworth seems to be taking Miley Cyrus' Twitter diss in stride.
The Hunger Games star was in "good spirits" as he hit the Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez fight Friday night in Las Vegas, and stopped by a pre-party for the sporting event, a source tells E! News.
Hemsworth attended the VIP pre-fight bash of Showtime PPV's presentation of The One: Mayweather vs. Canelo with pal Jeff Beacher, a group of guy friends and Ashley Greene, who walked in to the bash with them.
While he was at the affair, the hunky actor posed for photos with fans, sipped on a Corona, and bobbed his head to a Ne-Yo song that came on.
Although he only stuck around for about 30 minutes, the source said, "he seemed really chill and in good spirits" while he was there, adding, "he was just hanging out with his friends. It was a guys' weekend in Vegas."
Celebs like Dave Chappelle, Busta Rhymes, Heidi Klum, Jerry Bruckheimer, LL Cool J and Justin Bieber were also on hand for the event.
Hemsworth seemed to have a good time at the fight, the source added.
Earlier in the day, Hemsworth's "Wrecking Ball" fiancé unfollowed him on Twitter.
The move came after he was linked to January Jones--a story Hemsworth's rep slammed as "tabloid fiction."
Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne & More Celebs Flood Floyd Mayweather Vs. Canelo Alvarez Fight
Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne and more flocked to Las Vegas Saturday night for the big fight between Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez.
In fact, Justin and Lil Wayne didn't just attend the event, they helped amp up Mayweather.
The two artists walked the fighter in to the ring to face Alvarez, with a shirtless Lil Wayne performing a live remix of his hit song "A Mili" while the Biebs rocked black sunglasses and a plain black T-shirt.
The threesome's entrance had everyone from Seth MacFarlane to David Spade talking. Seth lightheartedly tweeted: "Nice to have Whoopi Goldberg here with--oh sorry, Lil Wayne." Whereas Eliza Dushku was thinking what we all were thinking: "Wait, I'm still stuck on #Bieber is #Mayweather's #HypeManJr..? #Alvarez #FightNight"
Spade didn't hold back, Instagramming a pic of their entrance with the caption: "WTF?? One of these things doesnt belong. He needs to be cropped! #teamcoughsyrup"

john cena and the total divas
In case you missed Sunday night's mid-season finale of Total Divas or you just want to relive it, we've got the best moments from the show in a full pic/gif recap!
Nattie is preparing for her big day with her WWE Superstar fiance Tyson Kidd (TJ) and the wedding is just days away.
Gismo (their cat) joins in and helps them plan...
Nattie's family comes over to help with the preparations and her mom surprises her with a homemade wedding dress.
Not all surprises are good surprises...
Nattie has already found her dream dress and she doesn't know how to let her mom know that she's not wearing this at her wedding.
She says the flower on it looks like a "lady part". We don't see it.
Yikes...
Nattie is super nice about it and tells her mom that she loves it but just doesn't feel like it fits the overall theme.
She says she'll wear it sometime in the future. Doubt it.
Jump to, Eva Marie and JoJo at the unveiling of the WWE Performance Center. They still don't seem to be on the best terms.
There's definitely some tension when a WWE executive tells them there's a spot opening up on the main roster. Eva says she really wants it and is ready for it.
JoJo's not convinced...
OH SNAP!
Nikki Bella is on the phone with her sister Brie Bella when John Cena comes up the stairs and tells her that there's a problem...
Nikki's worried, hangs up with Brie and listens to John explain the issue.
John wants Nikki to come meet his entire family!!! (That's a problem?)
But after further explanation, the dinner is the exact same day as Nattie's wedding. She would have to miss Nattie's wedding to be able to go.
She has to choose between the two.
It's now Monday Night Raw and the Divas are making their way into the stadium.
Nikki was recently injured and is still getting used to her crutches...
Why does Nikki keep falling?!
Nikki tells Nattie that she won't be able to make it to her wedding and Nattie is upset.
Nattie's own best friend is skipping out to go somewhere with her boyfriend and the stress of the wedding is becoming too much.
She breaks down and tells Brie everything that's going on...
Brie acts as a great friend and tells Nattie that all she should care about is herself and her big day. That's all that matters. (Go Brie!)
Nattie agrees and gives her own self a little pep talk.
Eva Marie finds out she was selected to be Nattie's valet during the big Diva match and she's getting her own big debut!
All the Divas watch her premiere backstage and JoJo is not happy.
After the wrestling event, the DIvas head back to their hotels and Trinity gets a call from Ariane saying that something is wrong. Her stomach is hurting her and she needs help!
Trinity rushes to her room and it's obvious that Ariane's not faking it. She's crying, holding her stomach and doesn't know what's wrong.
Trinity grabs the hotel phone and calls 911. She's not going to take any chances!
The paramedics arrive and her pain has only gotten worse. They load her up on a gurney and wheel her away.
Trinity follows the ambulance and waits for her at the hospital.
A few hours go by until Ariane is released and Trinity drives her back to the hotel.
Ariane says they think it has something to do with her "lady business" but they don't know exactly what's wrong. She thanks Trinity for being there for her.
Crash! THUNDER! Pow! It's the day of Nattie's wedding and the weather is not cooperating...
Nattie says her beach wedding is ruined and things just keep getting worse.
Gismo is there to help cheer her up though!
All the Divas arrive (minus Nikki) and Ariane shows up with someone...
Yep...him...
Ariane explains that after a little while, they decided they couldn't be apart and got back together.
Nattie's nervous that he's going to cause a scene and Eva Marie admits that the two of them freak her out. (We don't blame them.)
While they're getting ready for Nattie's wedding, Nikki is with John in Massachusetts visiting his entire family.
John says it's very rare for them to all get together like this and it's even more rare that he's even able to attend.
It seems like it's going well and Nikki is getting to meet all of them for the first time.
There's no drama and they all seem to like her!
There might not be drama with Nikki and John, but Jaret (a longtime friend of Nattie who admitted to having feelings for her) just showed up to the wedding and it's super awkward.
Nattie hasn't told TJ about the whole situation and Jaret strolls in and tells him that she's been texting and calling him.
Then out of nowhere, congratulates him and says he's a "lucky guy"...
It's about to go down!
TJ asks him to step out in the hall and confronts him for trying to take away his girl.
After having that stern conversation, TJ walks into Nattie's room and confronts her for texting and calling him behind his back.
TJ asks her if they should even get married or have the wedding!
Nattie apologizes and says she didn't mean for it to go this far. They're just friends and she should have told him about the whole situation beforehand.
She knows she messed up...
TJ accepts her apology.
Enough with that drama, tt's finally time for the wedding!
And there's no better way to get ready for a wedding than to brush a goatee. (We hear it's good luck...)
The music plays and Gismo, Nattie and her father all slowly walk down the aisle...
At this point, we're crying, everyone in the audience is crying, Nattie's crying, the Divas are crying... it's just a whole lotta tears...
The ceremony concludes and Nattie and TJ kiss as husband and wife!
They all get to the reception and they start having a ball.
Nikki calls Nattie and apologizes that she can't be there but gives her her blessing and wishes them luck in their future. Nattie accepts her apology and says it really means a lot that she'd call.
Good to see that they're better!
Nattie and TJ step onto the dance floor and have their first dance.
It's romantic, cute and we're still crying at this point...
TJ then surprises Nattie and shows a video montage of them from WWE and all of their years together.
Nattie starts tearing up again and now we're crying even harder!
It's so nice!
Nattie throws her bouquet and Brie leaps and catches it out of the air!
Her WWE Superstar boyfriend Daniel Bryan gives the camera a scared look and then laughs.
Will they be next to get married?!
Things with Jaret seemed to have been smoothed over and everything between him and Nattie are ok.
They're seen dancing and having a good time together.
The celebration starts to wind down and Nattie and TJ take a final, cute wedding photo together.
Congrats to the happy couple!
John and Nikki go out for a special dinner and Nikki brings up their relationship...
She says they hardly argue and she knows that he's the one for her.
John agrees, thinks a little bit and finally asks her to move in with him!
Nikki thinks about it, says she feels ready and says YES!
The adorable couple kiss and the show fades to black... #NenaForever
