Facts: SpongebobSquarePants
SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated
television series which was created by marine
biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. The
series chronicles the exploits and adventures of
the title character and his various friends in the
fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom.
Hillenburg initially conceieved the show in 1984
but the first episode was aired on Nickelondeon in
the United States on May 1, 1999, following the
television airing of the 1999 Kids' Choice Awards.
The show reached enormous popularity by 2000
during its second season and has remained
popular since.
The series' popularity has made it a media
franchise, contributing to its position as
Nickelodeon's highest rated show, the most
distributed property of MTV Networks, and among
Nicktoons' most watched shows. So far, the
media franchise has generated an $8 billion
merchandising revenue for Nickelodeon.
Apart from the TV series, a feature film of the
series was released in theaters on November 19,
2004, with a sequel in development with a
projected release date of February 13, 2015.
Here are some facts you may not have known
about Spongebob.
1. Spongebob's name was originally "Spongeboy"
but the name was already taken by a mop.
2. Tom Kenny, the voice of Spongebob, preforms
Spongebobs laugh by saying "Aaah!" and hitting
his throat. The laugh is supposed to make the
viewer think of dolphins.
3. President Barack Obama told TV Guide in 2007
that Spongebob was his favorite character
because Spongebob is what he watched with his
daughters.
4. Guest stars on Spongebob include Johnny
Depp, Alec Baldwin, Amy Poehler, David
Hasselhoff, Scarlet Johansson, and Gene
Simmons.
5. Squidward only has six tentacles because eight
makes the character look too busy.
6. In Korea, Spongebob is known as Square
Square Sponge.
7. The Krabby Patty was originally going to be
called the Barnacle Burger.
8. Plankton's computer wife Karen is named after
Steve Hillenburg's wife and is voiced by Jill Talley,
the wife of Tom Kenny.
9. Almost every time a character throws
something away you can hear a glass breaking.
10. Spongebob has been broadcast around the
world in 25 different languages.
